Unguarded Love Chapter 8: The Question Alice Cannot Ignore The photograph lay on Alice Summers' desk like a loaded weapon. The room was silent. Painfully silent. Only the ticking of the clock could be heard. Alice sat motionless in her chair. Her eyes remained fixed on the image. Alex. Angela. Together. Far too close. Far too comfortable. Far too intimate. Every explanation she had created over the past few weeks suddenly began collapsing. The office meeting. The nervous secretary. The strange conversations. Alex's hesitation whenever Angela's name appeared. Everything now carried a different meaning. Alice picked up the photograph again. Perhaps she was overreacting. Perhaps there was a reasonable explanation. Perhaps... But even as she tried to comfort herself, her heart whispered a painful truth. Something was wrong. Very wrong. Her phone rested beside her. Alex's name stared back from the screen. For nearly twenty minutes she debated calling him. Finally, she pressed the button. The phone rang. Once. Twice. Three times. Then— "Hey, Alice." His voice sounded normal. Too normal. Alice swallowed. "Alex." Immediately he noticed something. "What's wrong?" The question almost made her laugh. What wasn't wrong? She glanced at the photograph again. Then took a deep breath. "I need to see you." Silence. Brief. But noticeable. "When?" "Tomorrow." Another pause. "Okay." Alice closed her eyes. For the first time in years, talking to him felt difficult. After the call ended, she sat alone in the darkness. The engagement ring on her finger suddenly felt heavier than ever. Across Havenville, Prince Alex Whitmore lowered his phone slowly. His heart pounded. He knew. Instinctively. Something had happened. Something had changed. Alice rarely sounded uncertain. Yet tonight uncertainty filled every word she spoke. Alex immediately thought of Angela. Had she done something? Had she sent something? His stomach twisted. Without hesitation, he grabbed his car keys. Twenty minutes later, he stood outside Angela's penthouse. The door opened before he knocked. As though she had expected him. Perhaps she had. Angela smiled. "You look upset." Alex stepped inside. "What did you do?" Angela remained calm. "I have no idea what you're talking about." "Stop playing games." The smile disappeared. For several moments neither spoke. Then Angela sighed. "She was going to find out eventually." The answer was all he needed. Rage flashed across his face. "You sent something." "I sent the truth." "No." His voice hardened. "You sent a photograph." Angela crossed her arms. "Which happened to contain the truth." Alex stared at her. For the first time, he saw how dangerous things had become. Neither of them were in control anymore. The situation had grown beyond manipulation. Beyond secrets. Beyond lies. Now consequences were coming. And there was no escaping them. Meanwhile, Sandra Davis sat inside her apartment reviewing old photographs. A terrible habit. One she should have stopped weeks ago. Yet she couldn't help herself. Photographs of happier days. Days with Jason. Days before mistakes. Days before regret. Her phone buzzed unexpectedly. A text message. Not from Jason. From an unknown number. Confused, Sandra opened it. Attached was a photograph. Her blood ran cold. Daniel. The blonde woman. Kissing. The image felt like a knife through her heart. Moments later another message arrived. Thought you deserved to know. Sandra dropped her phone. Tears immediately filled her eyes. The betrayal was no longer suspected. It was confirmed. Daniel hadn't simply lied. He had been living a double life. And suddenly she understood why Jason looked at her differently now. Because trust, once broken, changes everything. The following morning arrived far too quickly. Alice barely slept. By ten o'clock she found herself seated inside a quiet restaurant overlooking Azure River. The same restaurant where she and Alex shared countless memories. First dates. Anniversary dinners. Dreams about the future. Now she sat waiting. Wondering if all those memories had been built upon lies. At exactly ten fifteen, Alex arrived. His expression immediately told her everything. He looked nervous. Guilty. Afraid. None of those emotions reassured her. He sat down carefully. Neither spoke. Finally Alice removed the photograph from her purse. And placed it on the table. Alex stared at it. Then closed his eyes. The silence became unbearable. Alice's voice trembled. "Tell me the truth." Alex remained motionless. "Alice..." "No." Tears gathered in her eyes. "Don't call my name." The pain in her voice shattered him. For the first time, Alex truly understood the damage he had caused. Not because of the affair. Not because of Angela. But because of the betrayal of trust. "How long?" The question lingered heavily. Alex looked down. "A few months." Alice felt her heart break. A few months. While planning a wedding. While discussing their future. While promising forever. He had been lying. Every single day. Tears rolled down her cheeks. Yet somehow she remained composed. "Do you love her?" Alex closed his eyes. And that silence became his answer. Alice stood immediately. Her chair scraped against the floor. Several nearby diners looked over. Neither noticed. Neither cared. "You should have told me." Her voice broke. "You should have told me." Then she walked away. Leaving Alex alone. Leaving three years behind. Leaving a future that no longer existed. Later that afternoon, Alice drove aimlessly through Havenville. She didn't know where she was going. She only knew she couldn't go home yet. Not like this. Not while trying to explain shattered dreams to her family. Eventually she found herself near Azure River. The same location she often visited when life felt overwhelming. She parked. Then sat quietly on a bench overlooking the water. For the first time since leaving the restaurant, she allowed herself to cry. Not delicate tears. Not graceful tears. Real tears. The kind born from genuine heartbreak. Minutes passed. Perhaps longer. Then a familiar voice interrupted her thoughts. "Alice?" She quickly wiped her face. Jason Wilson stood nearby. Concern visible in his eyes. For a moment, neither spoke. Jason immediately noticed her distress. "What happened?" Alice almost said nothing. Almost. But something about his presence felt strangely comforting. Perhaps because he wasn't involved. Perhaps because he expected nothing. Or perhaps because wounded hearts often recognize one another. "My fiancé cheated on me." The words escaped before she could stop them. Jason froze. A complicated emotion crossed his face. Pain. Recognition. Understanding. Then he quietly sat beside her. Not too close. Not too far. Just enough. And for the next several minutes, neither spoke. Because sometimes silence offers more comfort than words. Across the city, Sandra confronted Daniel. The photographs lay scattered across his living room table. Evidence. Proof. Truth. Daniel looked irritated rather than remorseful. And somehow that hurt even more. "You followed me?" Sandra couldn't believe what she was hearing. "That's your concern?" Daniel shrugged. The gesture disgusted her. Finally she understood. The man she had chosen over Jason wasn't better. He wasn't different. He simply wore a better mask. And now that mask had fallen. "I'm done." Daniel laughed. "You'll come back." Sandra looked at him. Really looked at him. Then shook her head. "No." And for the first time, she meant it. That evening, Havenville glowed beneath another beautiful sunset. Yet several lives had changed forever. Alice's engagement was crumbling. Alex faced the consequences of his choices. Sandra finally escaped Daniel's lies. And Jason found himself unexpectedly sitting beside a heartbroken woman who understood his pain better than anyone else. Neither realized it yet. Neither could possibly know. But destiny had finally begun moving them toward each other. Not as lovers. Not yet. First, they would become something far more important. Friends. Because the strongest love stories rarely begin with passion. Sometimes they begin with understanding. And understanding was exactly what Alice and Jason needed.
