Shadows in the Rain
The night was drowning in rain. It came down in relentless sheets, drumming against the rusted roof of the old train station. Pools of water shimmered on the cracked platform, reflecting the flicker of failing overhead lights. Javeria stood under the awning, clutching the collar of her coat, her pulse thudding in her ears. She had promised herself she would never see him again. But promises were made to be broken. Then gentleman, Asif stepped from the far shadows, the storm behind him like a halo of fury. His black coat clung to his frame, his dark hair slicked against his forehead. His gaze — that unflinching, piercing gaze — locked on hers and didn’t waver. His voice was low, steady, but with an edge she couldn’t name. “I didn’t think you’d come back” Asif said. “I didn’t come for you.” Her tone was colder than she felt. His lips twitched, not quite a smile. “No. You came for answers.” Lightning tore the sky, spilling silver light across his face. Two years ago, he had destroyed her — or so she’d believed. It was Asif’s testimony that had blackened her father’s name, that had made the world think of him as a traitor before his mysterious death. She had left this cursed town swearing she’d never return. But then came the letter. A single sheet, found in her late father’s desk, stained with something dark. They’re watching me. If anything happens, it won’t be an accident. And at the bottom, a name scrawled in a shaking hand: Asif Khan. “I don’t need your help,” she said, turning to leave. “You won’t last a week here alone.” He moved closer, his boots splashing through shallow puddles. “Whoever killed your father still has eyes in this town. And now they know you’re back.” “I can handle myself.” A shadow shifted at the far end of the platform. She saw it, and so did he. The rain blurred the figure’s edges, but the stillness of it, the way it was watching, made her skin crawl. Asif’s jaw tightened. “Follow me. Now.” She didn’t want to. She didn’t want to trust him. But when the shadow took a step forward, she found herself falling in step beside him. --- The first week was chaos. An alleyway ambush. A threatening note pinned to her apartment door with a knife. A car following her down empty streets at night. Every time, Asif appeared — uninvited, unasked — to pull her out of danger. He never explained how he knew where she’d be. She never asked. They argued constantly. She accused him of watching her, of hiding things. He accused her of being reckless, of not understanding the danger she was in. But underneath the anger, something else grew — an uneasy rhythm. Late-night strategy talks over cold tea. The briefest touches when one pulled the other to safety. It was only in stolen moments, when his hand lingered too long on her arm or when she caught him looking at her with something like regret, that she remembered they weren’t always enemies. --- One night, they broke into the old municipal archives. The air was heavy with dust and secrets. By the light of a single flashlight, Javeria pulled a faded folder from the shelves. Inside was a list of names — all men who had served in the security bureau with her father. Half were crossed out in red ink. The last name was Asif’s. She turned on him, fury boiling in her chest. “You were on their list.” His expression darkened. “That’s not what you think—” “Isn’t it? You were working with them. You lied to me. You lied about everything.” “Javeria—” He stepped forward, but she backed away. The sound of footsteps echoed in the hall outside. Asif grabbed her wrist. “We have to go. Now.” She yanked her hand free. “No. You go. I’m done with you.” --- The next day, she got another letter. No return address, just one line scrawled across the paper: He’s the reason your father is dead. It was signed with the same hand as her father’s old note. --- The confrontation came two nights later, in the place where it had begun — the train station. The rain was just as heavy, the shadows just as thick. Asif was waiting. “I know what you’ve been told,” he said, his voice raw. “But you have to listen to me. Your father—” “Don’t you dare say his name.” Her hand tightened around the small pistol in her coat pocket. He took a slow step forward. “Everything I did — every lie I told — it was to protect you.” She laughed bitterly. “Protect me? You destroyed me.” Thunder cracked overhead. Somewhere nearby, a metal door slammed in the wind. “I’m the only reason you’re still alive.” His voice broke on the last word. “Javeria, there’s so much you don’t—” She pulled the gun from her pocket. His eyes widened, not in fear, but in something far worse — resignation. “If you believe I’m guilty,” he said quietly, “then do it.” The storm roared around them. She thought of her father’s face, of the years stolen from her, of the letter. Her hand shook once. And then she pulled the trigger. The sound was deafening. Asif staggered back, his coat blooming dark with blood. He didn’t fall immediately — instead, he looked at her, almost softly, as if he’d been expecting this all along. In the seconds before he collapsed, he managed one last sentence. “They wanted this… not me.” His body hit the wet concrete with a sickening finality. --- It was only after the sirens began to wail in the distance that Javeria noticed the envelope in his coat pocket. Her fingers trembled as she opened it. Inside were photographs — her father, alive, speaking with Asif in secret. On the back of one photo, in her father’s handwriting, was a single line: If I don’t make it, trust Asif. He’s the only one who knows the truth. The rain blurred her vision, but she didn’t bother wiping her eyes. The man she had killed was the only one who had ever truly been on her side. And she had just buried the truth with him.
