CHAPTER I: THE NEW BOY
The first day of senior year arrived with the familiar sounds of New York City waking up.
Cars honked in the distance. Street vendors arranged their carts along the sidewalks. People hurried to work while students made their way to schools across Manhattan.
Olivia Carter stood in front of the mirror in her bedroom, adjusting the collar of her school uniform.
Senior year.
The final year before college.
The year that would decide her future.
She took a deep breath and grabbed her backpack.
Downstairs, her mother was already preparing breakfast.
"You look nervous," Mrs. Carter said with a smile.
"I'm not nervous."
"You've checked your schedule three times."
Olivia laughed.
"Maybe a little."
Her mother placed a plate of pancakes in front of her.
"You'll do great. You always do."
Olivia smiled.
Her mother had always been her biggest supporter.
After breakfast, she headed for the subway.
The train was crowded with commuters and students.
As the city rushed past outside the windows, Olivia reviewed her goals for the year.
Maintain top grades.
Get accepted into Columbia University.
Stay focused.
Avoid distractions.
Simple.
At least, that was the plan.
Manhattan Heights High School buzzed with excitement.
Students filled the hallways, laughing and catching up after summer break.
Some discussed sports.
Others talked about parties.
A few worried about college applications.
Olivia walked through the front doors and immediately spotted her best friend.
"Olivia!"
Sophia Bennett waved from across the hallway.
Olivia smiled.
Sophia rushed over and wrapped her in a hug.
"I missed you!"
"It was only two months."
"Exactly. Two whole months."
Olivia laughed.
Some things never changed.
The two friends headed toward their lockers.
Sophia immediately launched into a story about her summer vacation.
Olivia listened patiently.
Halfway through the story, another voice interrupted.
"Good morning, ladies."
Both girls turned.
Noah Parker stood behind them with a confident grin.
He wore the school basketball jacket despite the warm weather.
At six feet two inches tall, Noah attracted attention wherever he went.
Students respected him.
Teachers liked him.
Most girls had crushes on him.
But Olivia only saw her best friend.
"Morning," Olivia said.
Noah smiled.
"Ready for senior year?"
"Ready to survive it."
Sophia rolled her eyes.
"Here she goes again."
"What?"
"You act like school is a prison."
Olivia laughed.
"Not prison. Just stressful."
Noah leaned casually against the locker.
"You'll still graduate at the top of the class."
"Hopefully."
"No hopefully about it."
Olivia smiled.
Noah always believed in her.
More than anyone else.
What she didn't know was that Noah's feelings had long since become more than friendship.
He had loved her for years.
He just never found the courage to tell her.
Meanwhile, a black SUV pulled up outside the school.
A teenage boy stared through the tinted window.
His expression remained unreadable.
The driver glanced at him.
"We're here."
The boy nodded.
For several seconds, he didn't move.
This wasn't his first school.
Not even close.
Over the past few years, his life had changed completely.
New cities.
New schools.
New identities.
New lies.
And now another fresh start.
The driver cleared his throat.
"You'll be fine."
The boy finally opened the door.
"I know."
As he stepped onto the sidewalk, students immediately noticed him.
He ignored the stares.
Ignored the whispers.
Ignored everything.
He had learned how.
Keeping people at a distance was easier.
Safer.
The fewer people who knew him, the better.
Especially if they discovered who he really was.
Officially, he was Ethan Williams.
But Ethan Williams didn't actually exist.
Not before two years ago.
The name had been created for one purpose.
To hide Alexander Kingsley.
The son of one of New York's most powerful business families.
A family surrounded by scandals, media attention, and secrets.
Nobody at Manhattan Heights could know that.
Nobody.
Inside the main office, Principal Harris welcomed the new student.
"Mr. Williams, welcome to Manhattan Heights."
"Thank you."
"You'll find the students friendly."
Ethan doubted that.
People were usually friendly until they wanted something.
The principal handed him a schedule.
"Your first class is English Literature."
Ethan nodded.
"Good luck."
"Thanks."
He left the office and entered the crowded hallway.
Students moved around him like a river.
For a moment, he wondered if coming here had been a mistake.
Then he remembered his mother's words.
One year.
Just one normal year.
That was all she wanted for him.
One year without cameras.
One year without reporters.
One year without being Alexander Kingsley.
He could do that.
At least he hoped he could.
The bell rang.
Students hurried toward class.
Olivia checked her schedule while walking.
Big mistake.
As she turned a corner, she slammed directly into someone.
Books flew everywhere.
Papers scattered across the floor.
"Oh no!"
She immediately dropped to her knees.
"I'm so sorry."
Another student knelt beside her.
"It's okay."
The voice was calm.
Deep.
Unfamiliar.
Olivia looked up.
For a moment, everything around her seemed to disappear.
The boy in front of her had dark hair and striking blue eyes.
He looked equally surprised.
Neither spoke.
The hallway noise faded into the background.
Then reality returned.
Embarrassed, Olivia quickly gathered her papers.
The boy picked up one of her notebooks and handed it over.
"You dropped this."
"Thanks."
"No problem."
For a second, it seemed like he wanted to say something else.
Instead, he stood.
Olivia watched him walk away.
"Who was that?" Sophia asked, appearing beside her.
"I have no idea."
Students nearby were already whispering.
"That's the new guy."
"The transfer student."
"He's cute."
"No kidding."
Olivia shook her head.
"Come on."
But as she headed toward class, she found herself glancing back.
The mysterious boy disappeared into the crowd.
For reasons she couldn't explain, she couldn't stop thinking about him.
Across the hallway, Ethan entered his classroom.
He chose a seat near the window.
Alone.
Exactly where he liked to sit.
As students filled the room, he noticed someone entering.
The same girl from the hallway.
The one he'd bumped into.
She sat three rows away.
For some reason, he remembered her smile.
That was unusual.
He rarely remembered people.
The teacher entered.
"Class, before we begin, I'd like to introduce a new student."
Every head turned.
Ethan stood.
"Everyone, this is Ethan Williams."
The room erupted with curiosity.
The teacher continued.
"Please make him feel welcome."
Ethan sat back down.
The introductions ended.
But the whispers didn't.
He could feel eyes on him.
Questions.
Curiosity.
Suspicion.
The same things followed him everywhere.
Still, one pair of eyes stood out.
Olivia Carter's.
And neither of them knew that this simple meeting would become the beginning of a story that would change both of their lives forever.
