Chapter three

1175 Words
/ Seraphina / I was able to get married to Alpha Kaiser without any suspicion but I did feel guilty for having to lie to him. “ I’m a terrible person,” I sighed. “ Lady Sera? What are you doing in the kitchen?” The head maid, Melinda walked in. “ Just Sera please and also, I wanted to make breakfast for Kaiser,” I smiled proudly. “ I tried to stop her,” the chief cook raised his hands in surrender. He really had tried to stop me but I was persistent. “ You shouldn’t be doing kitchen work, honey,” she rubbed her forehead. “ It’s not something that’s too difficult and I only want to handle breakfast,” I knew I didn’t want to handle cooking every meal like before but I’d love to handle breakfast and dinner. I owed him this much for lying straight to his face. “ Hmm, what’s that nice smell? Melinda got distracted by the scent of what I was making. “ Oh, that? It’s just the aroma of freshly brewed coffee,” I said proudly. “ I’m making coffee, bacon and eggs for breakfast.” “ I didn’t think you’d know how to cook. Aren’t you the heiress of Orland Pharmaceuticals?” She asked rhetorically. Well, I was the heiress, in name only that is. I was the one in charge of majority of the house chores back at home so I learned how to do things like cooking, cleaning, washing and basically anything a maid can do. I was slightly excited today and had even woken up earlier, eager to surprise Kaiser with a breakfast I had prepared myself. I didn’t need to since I wasn’t in my family’s house anymore but I wanted to. I only had one major obstacle… “ Do you need my help?” Melinda asked. “ No, I can handle this myself,” I smiled. “ Don’t overdo it,” she worried over me. “ I’m fine,” I assured her. To be frank, I chose to cook because of the tension between I and Kaiser. We’ve been married for a month and half now but our relationship has stayed the same from the very first day we got married. Initially, I couldn’t blame him for how he treated me indifferently since no one would be happy about an arranged marriage but I thought we could make things work but that was unfortunately not the case. “ I’d like you to serve Kaiser his breakfast,” I instructed Melinda. “ Why don’t you serve him though? After all, you’re the one who made it,” she said. I knew she had my best interest at heart but doing that would only end up disastrous. “ I can’t serve him his food. You know how it is between us,” I said awkwardly and she nodded her head. I was grateful that she understood. Some minutes later, Kaiser entered the dining room, his gaze sweeping over the table with indifference. He took a seat. “ Morning, Kaiser,” I greeted, my voice a bit too bright. I held my breath, hoping he’d notice the extra effort put into his meal. He glanced at me and grunted in response. He was more interested in the newspaper in his hands. “ Have a seat,” he said calmly. I went ahead to sit down at the far end of the dining table which was directly opposite his seat. He liked it when I keep my distance. Two maids came up to the dining table to serve us. The maid attending to him poured him the coffee I had been brewing for him this morning. My fingers trembled as I watched him sip from it with an unreadable expression. “ Your tea, ma’am,” the maid attending to me poured me tea instead which was my preference. “ Thank you,” I muttered as I picked up the cup. It wasn’t unusual to have awkward breakfasts like this since he mostly preferred us to eat together in the mornings even if it was ritualistic. I believe he was being considerate about my feelings. “ The bacon is particularly savory today,” Melinda remarked as she served him. Kaiser looked up from the newspaper he has in his hand, his gaze landing on the plate. “ Is it?” “ Yes, sir,” Melinda nodded her head and was smiling a little too bright as he tasted his food. I gulped, waiting for him to react. * So how do you like it?” I wish Melinda would stop probing him because knowing how smart and sharp Kaiser is, chances are he’d notice that it wasn’t Melinda or the head chef who prepared his meal. “ Nana, I appreciate your enthusiasm but I prefer the usual breakfast prepared by the kitchen staff or you.” “ Oh dear, you’re quite quick to notice,” Melinda tilted her head as she let out a sigh. “ And you weren’t helping in that regards,” he let her know. He pushed his plate away, the partially eaten bacon and eggs lying there. I knew he’d react this way if he finds that I cooked for him. “ Was he going to scold me?” I thought as I closed my eyes waiting for the repercussions. “And Seraphina,” he added, his eyes now on me, cold and unreadable, “please don’t go out of your way to cook for me again. It’s not your duty to prepare my meals.” I felt tears prick my eyes, but I didn’t want to… at least not in front of him. “ What happened today won’t repeat itself,” I replied, my voice trembling as I bit down on my lower lip. He rose from the table unbothered by my resolve. “ Even if you don’t want to eat something she prepared, you can at least compliment your wife. She put in a lot of effort so don’t just think you can walk out of here,” Melinda was annoyed on my behalf. She was the only one who could talk to Kaiser like this as she practically raised him. “ If I give my thoughts, you’ll stop nagging me, right?” He turned back to look at her. “ Yes but I don’t want half-hearted flattery. I would prefer to hear your honest opinion,” she demanded from him. I don’t think I wanted to hear his honest opinion, I’d rather he flatters me. “ It tasted different…not in a bad way though,” he glanced at me briefly as he gave his opinion. With that, he took his suit jacket and giving Melinda a kiss on the forehead, he made his way out. “ I’m so sorry, Sera. I ruined everything,” Melinda apologized. “ I must have gotten ahead of myself.” “ It’s fine. I’m glad that he at least didn’t hate what I made,” I grinned. That was satisfactory enough for me.
