Chapter Thirteen
As the years past, Mr. Major retired and turned over the company to me. I promoted Diane to my old job and we worked closely together building the company. Julia and I settled into traditional married life. I spent at least one day a week with Maria taking her places and showering presents on her.
In the beginning, I was afraid that Julia would resent my spending time with Maria, but she didn’t seem to mind. Thinking back on it, I wondered if she figured out that maybe Maria was my daughter. If she did, she never mentioned it. When we were first married and she knew that we were not going to have a child, she wanted to adopt. But after a while and my making excuses as to why we shouldn’t, she suddenly dropped to subject. We never discussed it again.
