Chapter 1: Just One Thought
Sometimes I wonder how a single thought can stay with someone for years. It can appear quietly, like a whisper in the back of your mind, and disappear just as quickly. At that moment, it feels meaningless. Ordinary. Something you forget as soon as the day begins. But later… somehow that same thought becomes a memory you return to again and again. And strangely enough, it always begins with an ordinary day. Like that morning in Busan. The air smelled faintly of salt from the sea, carried through the streets by the early breeze. Busan mornings were always like that—fresh, a little cool, and full of quiet movement as people rushed toward their daily routines. Students in dark uniforms walked along the sidewalks, some half asleep, some laughing loudly as if school was the most exciting place on earth. I walked among them, my bag hanging loosely from one shoulder. I wasn’t exactly the type of person who talked a lot in the morning. Or in general. Some people called me quiet. Others thought I was mysterious. But honestly, I just liked observing things more than talking about them. People were interesting when they didn’t know someone was watching. “Kim Jiyeong!” A familiar voice suddenly cut through my thoughts. I didn’t even need to turn around. Only one person could sound that energetic this early in the morning. I slowly turned my head. Kim Jaeyeon was running toward me from across the street, her long hair swaying behind her as she waved both hands in the air like she was greeting someone after ten years instead of ten hours. I sighed softly. “She’s going to trip one day…” I muttered. Sure enough, two seconds later— “Ah—!” She stumbled slightly on the sidewalk before catching her balance. I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Unbelievable.” Jaeyeon finally reached me, slightly out of breath but smiling brightly as if nothing had happened. “You saw that, didn’t you?” she asked. “Yes.” “And you didn’t help?” “You were ten meters away.” She puffed her cheeks in protest. “You’re such a cold friend.” “I’m a realistic friend.” She laughed softly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. That was Jaeyeon. Kind, gentle, and calm most of the time… but somehow also chaotic in the smallest ways. Most people at school saw her as the mature one. The responsible one. The girl teachers trusted with everything. But I knew the truth. Inside, she was basically a twelve-year-old. “What are you thinking about so early in the morning?” she asked, walking beside me. “Nothing.” “That’s a lie.” “You’re very confident for someone who almost fell five seconds ago.” She gasped dramatically. “You promised never to talk about that!” “I promised nothing.” We continued walking toward the large gates of **Haeun High School**. Students filled the courtyard, talking loudly, exchanging homework, or complaining about teachers they disliked. Jaeyeon suddenly leaned closer to me. “Did you hear the rumor?” I already knew what kind of rumor she meant. “No.” “Apparently someone confessed near the gym yesterday.” “That happens every week.” “But this one was dramatic.” “How?” “The girl cried.” I blinked slowly. “That doesn’t narrow it down.” Jaeyeon giggled. “You’re so boring sometimes.” “And yet you keep talking to me.” “Because you’re my best friend.” Her voice softened slightly when she said that. I didn’t reply, but I felt the small warmth behind her words. For a moment, we simply stood near the school entrance, watching students pass by. And then suddenly— “Good morning, ladies.” A voice appeared behind us. Playful. Confident. Annoyingly cheerful. Jaeyeon froze instantly. I slowly turned around. Park Aiden stood a few steps behind us, his hands casually in his pockets, a crooked smile already forming on his face. His black hair looked slightly messy like he had just woken up, yet somehow he still looked like he stepped out of a magazine photoshoot. He tilted his head slightly. “Why do both of you look like you just saw a ghost?” Jaeyeon blinked. “I— we didn’t.” “You did.” “No, we didn’t.” “You definitely did.” He looked at me. “Jiyeong, confirm.” I shrugged. “She looked like she saw a ghost.” Jaeyeon turned to me in shock. “Traitor!” Aiden laughed. “You two are entertaining this early in the morning.” “You’re the one who appeared out of nowhere,” Jaeyeon said. “I said good morning.” “You startled us!” “That sounds like a personal problem.” She crossed her arms. “You’re impossible.” “And yet you still talk to me every day.” That playful smile returned to his face. For a second, Jaeyeon looked like she wanted to argue again. But instead, she just looked away. And that was when I noticed it. The smallest change in her expression. Her calm confidence suddenly became slightly awkward. And Aiden… well, he looked suspiciously amused. I narrowed my eyes slightly. Interesting. “Anyway,” Aiden said casually, “are you two walking to class or planning to stand here forever?” “We were waiting for you,” Jaeyeon replied quickly. He raised an eyebrow. “Oh?” She immediately panicked. “I mean— not waiting— I mean—” I turned away so they wouldn’t see my smile. Aiden chuckled softly. “Relax. I’m joking.” Jaeyeon muttered something under her breath. “What was that?” he asked. “Nothing.” “You definitely said something.” “Let’s just go to class.” The three of us started walking through the courtyard together. Students greeted Aiden as we passed. He seemed to know everyone. Extrovert was an understatement. Meanwhile, I walked quietly beside them, listening to their conversation. “You didn’t finish the math homework, did you?” Jaeyeon asked him. “Of course I didn’t.” “Why not?” “I forgot.” “You always forget.” “That’s because I trust you.” “That’s not how homework works.” “It works for me.” She sighed. “You’re hopeless.” “But lovable.” Jaeyeon turned slightly red. I pretended not to notice. For some reason, watching them talk like that made something cross my mind. A small thought. A strange one. Back then, none of us realized it yet. But the way they looked at each other… The way their voices softened without them noticing… It was the kind of thing people only understood much later. The kind of thing that quietly becomes part of your memories. We reached the classroom door. Students were already filling the room with noise and laughter. Aiden stopped near the entrance. “Well,” he said casually, “see you after class.” Jaeyeon nodded. “Don’t skip again.” “No promises.” And with that, he walked toward his seat. Jaeyeon watched him for a moment before quickly sitting down beside me. “You’re smiling,” she said suspiciously. “I’m not.” “You are.” “I’m really not.” “You definitely are.” I leaned back in my chair. “Just a thought.” “What thought?” I looked out the window. The morning sunlight spread across the school courtyard, warm and quiet. At that moment, everything felt normal. Peaceful. Like any other school day. But something inside my mind whispered a strange idea. A small, passing thought. The kind that seems meaningless when it first appears. Back then, I didn’t understand it. But years later…I would remember that exact morning. And realize something important. Sometimes the most ordinary days...become the memories we spend our lives trying to return to. ---
