Chapter 7: The Contract is Signed

738 Words
The silence inside the luxury limousine on the way back to the estate was heavy and suffocating. Killian hadn’t spoken a single word since they left his grandfather’s manor. He simply sat in the shadows of the leather interior, his storm-grey eyes fixed on the passing city lights, and his jaw set in a hard, unreadable line. Elena leaned her head against the cool glass window, her hands tightly interlaced in her lap to stop them from trembling. Her mind was trapped in a loop, replaying the terrifying moment Grandfather Jasper had joked about a great-grandchild. Killian had laughed it off smoothly, attributing her nausea to standard wedding nerves and a lack of sleep, but Elena knew she was walking on a knife's edge. When the car finally pulled up to the dark Sterling mansion, Killian stepped out first. He didn't wait for her. He marched up the grand stone steps with a cold, predatory focus. Elena followed him inside, the heavy front doors closing behind her with a definitive thud. The staff had already retired for the evening, leaving the grand foyer dim and quiet. "In my study," Killian commanded, his voice cutting through the stillness like a blade. He didn't turn around as he walked down the east wing corridor. Elena swallowed the lump of fear in her throat and followed him into his private sanctuary. The study was massive, lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves, a dark leather sofa, and a massive minimalist desk. Killian walked over to the desk, pulled out the heavy folder containing the Non-Disclosure and Mutual Marriage Agreement, and tossed it onto the polished wood. Beside it, he laid a sleek, matte-black fountain pen. "Sign the final addendum," Killian stated, his voice completely devoid of the warmth he had faked at dinner. "My accountants have already transferred your mother to our private facility. The medical staff is hers. Now, you lock in your end of the bargain." Elena approached the desk, the emerald silk of her dress rustling quietly. She picked up the heavy pen. Her fingers brushed against the smooth paper as she turned to the execution page. With a sharp, definitive stroke, she wrote her name: Elena Vance. Killian watched her hand move, his eyes tracking every line of her signature. The moment she finished, he picked up his own pen and signed his name beside hers. Killian Sterling. The contract was officially finalized. They were legally bound to a six-month lie. "Now that the paperwork is locked," Killian said, closing the folder with a sharp snap and locking it inside his heavy desk drawer, "we need to address your behavior at dinner. You looked like you were going to faint the moment the food arrived. If you are hiding a medical condition from me, Elena, tell me now. I do not tolerate liabilities." "I told you, it was just stress," Elena lied, keeping her voice as steady as possible while her heart hammered violently against her ribs. She couldn't let him see her panic. "I haven't eaten properly in days because of Harold. My body is just adjusting." Killian stared at her, his metallic eyes narrowing as if trying to dissect the lie right out of her face. The tension between them stretched until it felt like a physical weight in the room. Before he could push her any further, the internal intercom on his desk chimed softly. Killian pressed the button, his brow furrowing. "What is it?" Mrs. Gable’s voice filtered through the speaker, crisp and polite. “Forgive the late intrusion, Mr. Sterling. Dr. Harrison, the family’s private physician, has just arrived at the estate. Per the standard protocol for all new members of the Sterling household, he has brought the mandatory medical intake team to conduct Mrs. Sterling’s comprehensive health and blood evaluation. They are setting up in the guest wing now.” Elena’s entire body went entirely numb. The room seemed to tilt beneath her feet. A mandatory blood evaluation. If they drew her blood tonight, the lab results would reveal the pregnancy hormones immediately. The secret baby would be exposed before her first full day in the mansion even began. Killian looked up from the intercom, his cold gaze locking onto her suddenly ghostly reflection. "Go on, Elena," he murmured, a faint, dark smirk touching his lips as he gestured toward the door. "Let's see what the doctor has to say about your 'stress'."
