Chapter 1: The Substitute Trap
The silk of the wedding dress felt like ice against Elena’s skin. It wasn't hers. It belonged to her stepsister, Chloe, who had packed her bags and vanished into the night with a penniless bartender, leaving behind a furious father and a looming multi-million-dollar alliance with the Sterling family.
"Zip it up and stop crying, you useless girl," her stepfather, Harold, hissed, his fingers digging roughly into her shoulder as he forced her to face the full-length mirror. "If Killian Sterling realizes you aren't Chloe before the papers are finalized, your mother’s life support at the clinic gets shut off by midnight. Am I making myself clear?"
Elena swallowed the lump of bile rising in her throat, her hands trembling against the expensive tulle of the skirt. "He will find out, Harold. Everyone says he's a monster. A hermit. He'll know I'm a substitute the second he looks at me."
"Then you better make sure he doesn't care," Harold snarled, throwing a heavy lace veil over her face to obscure her features. "You smile, you nod, and you get into that limousine."
Hours later, the reality of her entrapment settled in. The wedding ceremony had been a blur of quick signatures in a dim, private chapel, completely shielded from the media. Now, Elena sat on the edge of a massive king-sized bed in the master suite of the Sterling estate. The room was dark, modern, and suffocatingly cold.
The rumors about Killian Sterling flashed through her mind. People called him the Tyrant of the City. Some said a horrific accident years ago had left his face scarred and his mind twisted, turning him into a recluse who ran a multi-billion-dollar empire through fear alone.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors clicked.
Elena’s breath hitched. She froze as the door swung open, revealing a tall, commanding silhouette standing against the hallway light. He stepped inside, closing the door behind him with a definitive, heavy snap.
As he walked into the dim light of the bedroom, Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. He wasn't a scarred monster at all. In fact, he was breathtakingly handsome—with a sharp, sculpted jawline, dark hair styled back, and piercing grey eyes. But his aura was pure ice. A lethal, suffocating tension filled the space between them.
He didn't say a word. He slowly unbuttoned his suit jacket, tossing it onto a nearby armchair, his cold gaze locked entirely on her.
"Take off the veil," his voice commanded, low and smooth like velvet, yet cutting right through her.
Elena’s fingers fumbled with the lace. Sensing her hesitation, Killian closed the distance between them in two long, predatory strides. Before she could even gasp, his large hand gripped the lace and ripped the veil away.
His grey eyes scanned her face. Instantly, his expression darkened into something terrifying. The temperature in the room seemed to drop to zero.
"Who the hell are you?" Killian growled.
Before she could answer, his hand shot forward, his fingers locking firmly around her delicate jaw, forcing her face up as he pinned her flat against the cold headboard of the bed. "You aren't Chloe Vance. Where is she, and what kind of sick game is your family playing with me?"
Killian’s grip on her jaw was firm, but it was his piercing grey eyes that truly trapped her. The scent of expensive cologne and rich cedarwood filled Elena's senses, a stark contrast to the absolute terror flooding her veins.
"I asked you a question," Killian repeated, his voice dropping an octave, lethal and quiet. "Who are you?"
"E-Elena," she choked out, her hands instinctively coming up to grasp his wrist. His skin was warm, his pulse steady and calm despite the fury radiating from his posture. "I’m Elena Vance. Chloe's half-sister."
Killian’s eyes narrowed, sweeping over her features—the wide, frightened brown eyes, the flushed cheeks, and the lips he had just bruised with his grip. A cold, cynical smirk touched his lips. "A substitute. Harold Vance actually had the audacity to sell me the wrong daughter."
He let go of her jaw so abruptly that Elena stumbled back against the silk pillows, gasping for air. Killian turned away, pulling a crisp linen handkerchief from his pocket to wipe his fingers, as if touching her had contaminated him.
"Where is Chloe?" he demanded, walking over to a sleek bar in the corner of the room. He poured himself two fingers of amber whiskey, not bothering to offer her any.
"She ran away," Elena said honestly, her voice trembling as she sat up, smoothing down the crumpled wedding gown. "Last night. She left with someone. My stepfather... he was desperate. The Sterling alliance is the only thing keeping his company afloat."
"And what do I care about Harold Vance's bankruptcy?" Killian downed the whiskey, his back to her. When he turned around, the handsome angles of his face were set in stone. "The contract was for Chloe. The Sterling family does not accept hand-me-downs, Elena."
He walked back toward the bed, towering over her like a dark god. "I could ruin your family by sunrise. I could pull every investment, call in every debt, and ensure your father spends the rest of his miserable life behind bars for fraud. And you," he leaned down, his face inches from hers, "would be cast out on the street with absolutely nothing."
The threat hung heavily in the air. Any other girl would have wept, but the mention of being cast out brought a different kind of terror to Elena's heart. If Harold was ruined tonight, her mother’s medical equipment would be unplugged by morning. She couldn't let that happen.
Elena forced her shoulders back, looking directly into the eyes of the city's most feared billionaire. "Then do it. Ruin Harold. He deserves it."
Killian paused, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his icy features. He hadn't expected defiance, let alone an endorsement of his threat.
"But please," Elena whispered, her fierce facade cracking just enough to let her desperation show, "don't punish my mother. If you cancel the alliance tonight, Harold will stop paying for her life support. I will do anything, Mr. Sterling. I will be your maid, your assistant, your scapegoat—just give me a chance to keep her alive."
Killian stared at her, analyzing her like a complex piece of code. Before he could respond, the heavy smartphone on his nightstand began to buzz violently. The caller ID flashed a name that made even the ruthless billionaire stiffen: Grandfather
