Chapter 9: The Lifeline / The Swap

The metallic tip of the needle caught the bright morning sunlight, gleaming with a terrifying brightness just inches from Elena's skin. The young assistant’s fingers were cool against her arm, aligning the syringe with a prominent vein. Behind her, Killian’s hands remained heavy on her shoulders. His thumbs stroked her collarbone in a slow, hypnotic rhythm that felt less like comfort and more like a physical anchor keeping her trapped in the chair. Three seconds, Elena thought, her pulse hammering wildly in her ears. I have three seconds before that needle goes in. As the assistant leaned forward, Elena didn't hesitate. She threw her left hand outward, deliberately striking the edge of the assistant’s steel medical tray. Clatter! The sharp, echoing crash of metal hitting the hardwood floor shattered the silence of the parlor. Glass vials shattered, rolling across the plush rug, and sterile cotton balls scattered in every direction. The assistant gasped, pulling the needle back instinctively as she stumbled away from the mess. "Oh my goodness! I am so, so sorry," Elena cried out, her voice a perfect blend of high-strung panic and embarrassment. She instantly slumped forward, pressing a hand tightly against her forehead. "I... I panicked. I've always had a phobia of needles. I felt so dizzy, and my hand just flew out—" "Elena," Killian’s deep voice cut through her apology, laced with a sudden, sharp calculation. He didn't sound angry, but his storm-grey eyes narrowed to slits as he looked down at the wreckage, then back up at her pale face. Dr. Harrison chuckled warmly, waving off the incident as he stood up. "No harm done, my dear. Needle phobias are incredibly common, especially when you're already exhausted. Let's get this cleaned up." "I'll help," Elena offered quickly, already sliding out of the chair before Killian could stop her. She dropped to her knees on the floor, frantically gathering the unbroken plastic vials to keep her face hidden from Killian's piercing gaze. The young assistant joined her on the floor, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Sterling. I should have been more careful with the tray placement." "No, it was entirely my fault," Elena whispered. As she reached for a rolling vial, her hand brushed against the assistant's. She used the physical contact to block Killian's line of sight, leaning in close so only the girl could hear her. "Please... I need a favor. I'll pay you whatever you want." The assistant froze, her eyes widening as she looked at Elena. "I can't take this test today," Elena hissed, her voice barely a breath against the ambient noise of Dr. Harrison speaking to Killian in the background. "I take a specific, heavy hormonal supplement for a private medical condition... it will completely skew the hormone baselines in the blood panel. It will make the results look incredibly abnormal. If my husband sees a faulty panel, he'll fire his medical team. Just... delay the blood draw. Give me forty-eight hours to clear my system. Please." It was a risky, desperate lie, but Elena injected pure, trembling desperation into her eyes. She looked like a terrified wife trying to hide a deeply embarrassing medical secret from a powerful, unforgiving husband. The assistant glanced up nervously toward Killian, who was listening to Dr. Harrison but keeping his gaze firmly fixed on Elena's back. The girl swallowed hard, internal conflict flashing across her face. Working for the Sterling family was prestigious, but a mistake that caused a scandal or a firing was a career-ender. "Forty-eight hours," the assistant whispered back, her fingers trembling as she grabbed the last vial. "I'll tell the doctor the sterile kit was contaminated by the fall. We'll have to schedule a follow-up at the private clinic on Thursday." Elena felt a massive, rushing wave of relief threaten to make her faint for real. "Thank you," she breathed. The assistant stood up quickly, dusting off her scrubs. "Dr. Harrison, I'm afraid the backup syringes and the chemical preservation vials were contaminated or cracked in the fall. I don't have a completely sterile setup to complete a comprehensive panel here." Dr. Harrison sighed, adjusting his glasses. "Ah, what a shame. Well, no matter. Killian, we will have to reschedule the blood draw. Bring Elena to my private clinic in forty-eight hours. Thursday morning at nine. We'll do the physical and the full panel there under proper conditions." Killian’s jaw tightened. He didn't look at the doctor. His grey eyes remained locked onto Elena as she stood up, brushing down her trousers. A dangerous, icy stillness settled over him. "Thursday morning," Killian repeated slowly, his low voice carrying a heavy, unspoken weight. "I will bring her myself.
