CHAPTER 23 As 1975 ended and 1976 began, the war had reached a new level of intensity. We managed to secure our borders and continued to launch strategic raids into enemy territory, but at considerable cost. Even with air superiority, the death toll continued to mount. And to everyone involved, there was no end in sight. Every time our forces gained an advantage, poised to deliver a knockout blow, another hostile faction from somewhere else on our borders launched a series of attacks in solidarity, forcing us to withdraw and counterattack. Rumours spread that our continued use of the fleet to bombard enemy positions was beginning to draw the ire of certain factions within the UEAF, who feared further retaliation against MARSCORP personnel, property, and excavation operations.
