Miles’s POV
My chest tightened as the words left Reynold’s mouth like venom. My eyes widened in shock, and I could feel the blood drain from my face. The sound of my heartbeat thundered in my ears.
No… not now. Not like this.
I turned slowly to look at Daphne. Her eyes locked with mine, wide, glassy, trembling with disbelief. Her lips parted as though she was trying to speak but couldn’t find the words.
“What did he just say, Miles?” she asked, her voice a fragile whisper laced with terror. “Tell me that it’s not true.”
