Daphne’s POV
My chest tightened so hard it felt like my heart had clenched into a fist. I could barely breathe. The world around me blurred, sound fading into a sharp ringing in my ears. My legs gave way beneath me for a moment and I stumbled back.
Miles reached for me instinctively, but I flinched, pulling away like his touch might burn me.
“Don’t touch me,” I whispered, my voice cracking as the tears streamed down my cheeks. I looked into his eyes—those eyes I used to find comfort in—and all I saw was betrayal.
“When did this happen, Miles?” My voice broke. “How could you let this happen?”
Tears welled in his eyes too, sliding down his face as he stared back at me. “I didn’t have a choice, Daphne,” he said, his voice shaking. “You were in danger… I just wanted to save you.”
