Monday brought the monthly dorm inspection and a text from the housing office at 7:02 AM that made Kaito sit straight up in bed: "Please ensure rooms are clean and presentable. Inspections begin at 10:00. Rooms 3A-3D first. - Management"
Kaito stared at the mark on his neck in the bathroom mirror. It had deepened overnight to a soft, bruised pink, unmistakably a claim, not a hickey. A hickey would be sloppy. This was centered perfectly over his gland, with the faint edge of teeth. The new unscented blocker spray didn't cover it, and the high collar of his sweater, the same white one from the mixer, had stretched and now showed the top edge. He pulled it up, it slid down. He tried a scarf, it looked suspicious in September.
"Renji," he called, panicked, voice small from the bathroom. "It didn't fade. It's darker."
Renji came to the bathroom door, already dressed in his Reiho polo, hair combed, and looked. His expression flickered - satisfaction, guilt, hunger, worry - then went neutral, captain mode.
"It will take three to four days, I said," he said. He reached out and gently pulled Kaito's collar down to see better, his thumb brushing the edge of the mark feather-light. Kaito shivered hard, his scent puffing sweet despite the blocker, his knees soft. "I held too long on purpose. I wanted it to hold through the mixer. I didn't think about inspection. I'm sorry."
"Inspection today," Kaito said, panicked. "If they see - housing will log it - if my mother - if anyone -"
He stopped. He hadn't told Renji that his own mother didn't know he was at Reiho, that he had cut contact after his father said Omegas should accept any Alpha who wanted them, that being claimed - even fake - on a housing form was a line.
Renji understood without needing the whole story. He stepped into the small bathroom, close, and gently pulled Kaito's collar down fully to see the mark centered, his thumb brushing it, not s****l, just checking.
"We will tell them we are together," Renji said quietly, looking at Kaito's eyes in the mirror. "If they ask, we are boyfriends who happen to share a dorm. That's all. It's common at Reiho. No one will question, and housing will just check a box. No one calls parents for this."
"Fake boyfriends," Kaito whispered, trying to make it a reminder.
"Fake," Renji echoed, but his thumb was still on his mark, warm.
They cleaned the room like a ritual to calm nerves, making beds with hospital corners, wiping desks, hiding the pill case in the locked drawer. Kaito kept touching his neck. Renji kept looking at his hand there.
At ten sharp, two inspectors knocked. One was the kind older lady from housing who had given Kaito the key, the other a stern man with a clipboard and a Reiho lanyard who looked at the two beds and the shared closet and frowned slightly.
"Takamori, Aizawa, room 3B. You are listed as roommates. Is that correct? Any changes to report?" the man asked, pen poised.
Kaito opened his mouth, but Renji spoke first, calm, sliding his arm around Kaito's waist and pulling him close, natural as breathing, as if they had done it a hundred times. His hand settled on Kaito's hip.
"We are roommates and partners," Renji said, even. "We requested to stay together. We would like to stay together next semester as well. Is that a problem?"
The lady smiled warmly, delighted. "Oh, not at all! Reiho welcomes all partnerships. We have many bonded pairs in dorms now. Your room is lovely, boys, very tidy. And that filter you requested, Takamori, is working well?"
The man looked at Kaito's collar, which had slipped when Renji pulled him, revealing the full pink mark now, cedar and peach mixing. He raised an eyebrow, professional.
"Aizawa, is that - a recent claim? For our records, is it consensual?"
Kaito's face burned to his ears. Renji's hand tightened on his waist, supportive, not forcing. Kaito took a breath that shook, lifted his chin, and let the mark show fully for the first time to a stranger, his hand not covering it.
"Yes," he said, soft but clear, voice steadier than he felt. "Renji gave it to me. At the mixer on Friday. So people would know. It was - consensual. Yes."
The man blinked, then nodded, quickly checking a box labeled "Partnered / Claim present - consensual" and another "Filter upgrade eligible." He didn't ask more. "Understood. Please ensure you both have completed the partnership form if you wish to remain together next semester. It is online. And consider a scent filter upgrade for bonded pairs, you are eligible now."
When they left, closing the door, Kaito collapsed onto his bed, heart pounding so loud he could hear it. Renji knelt beside him immediately, worried, hand hovering.
"You didn't have to show them," Renji said, low. "I would have covered and said we were private. I would have lied."
"I know," Kaito said, looking at Renji with wide, wet eyes, his hand over his mark. "But I wanted to. I wanted them to write it down - even if it's fake - that I - that we -"
He didn't finish. Renji reached out, cupped his face, and pressed a soft, dry kiss to the corner of his mouth, barely a kiss, more promise, more thank you. His lips were warm.
"Thank you," Renji whispered against his skin, cedar close. "For trusting me enough to let them see."
Outside, the inspectors marked 3B as "Bonded pair - filter upgrade approved - partnership form sent." Inside, Kaito touched his mark where Renji had kissed near it, and thought it had never felt more real or more frightening.
After the inspectors left, the housing lady slipped a small pamphlet under the door: Partnership Resources at Reiho, with a QR code for the form and a list of counseling, filter upgrades, and a note that said Congratulations to 3B in handwriting. Kaito picked it up and stared. Renji took it, folded it, and put it on Kaito's desk. We don't have to fill it, he said. It is optional. Kaito touched the pamphlet and said, But we could? If we wanted to stay together? Next year, I mean. Renji looked at him, his expression softening, and said, I want to. If you want. We have time to decide. Kaito folded the pamphlet small and put it in his drawer, next to his mother's photo, like a promise he was not ready to say out loud.
The partnership form email pinged on both their phones at the same time. Neither opened it right away. Kaito put the pamphlet in his drawer and Renji went back to his desk, but their eyes met in the mirror and stayed.
The partnership form stayed unopened in their email, but Kaito looked up what it meant that night on his phone, reading about shared housing for bonded pairs, about filters and rights, his heart loud.
The inspector's pen clicked: Bonded pair approved. Renji's hand found Kaito's under the desk, hidden, squeezing once. They were not bonded, not really, but the box checked felt like a promise.
