Kaito has loved his best friend for ten years but chose friendship over confession. In his sophomore year, his new dorm roommate is Renji Takahashi — the arrogant exchange student he hates most. When his best friend announces a girlfriend, Kaito learns the world has already changed: alphas, betas and omegas now exist to counter population decline. That night, he finds Renji collapsed from an early heat, a sweet, intoxicating scent filling their tiny dorm. One night, one bond, they wake up as fated mates. Kaito is an omega who never wanted to be claimed, and Renji is an alpha who swears he is straight. Can a forced bond built on heats and misunderstanding survive jealousy, rut, and the secret Kaito is trying to hide?

Chapter 1 - Unwanted Roommate
Kaito Aizawa had learned to travel light. One suitcase, one duffel, and a locked pill case that rattled with suppressants. When the housing office slid the key across the counter and said "Reiho Dorm 3B, you will like your roommate, he is very responsible," Kaito nodded and did not mention he was an Omega who had just been outed by his last roommate for money. Three weeks ago at his old university, his roommate Haru had found the suppressants, taken a photo, and sold it to a confession page for five thousand yen. By morning, everyone knew. Alphas he had never spoken to were knocking, offering "help" with his heat, Betas were whispering. The worst was not the propositions but the way Haru laughed and said, "You acted so pure, but you are just an Omega pretending to be a Beta. You should be grateful someone noticed you." Kaito left that afternoon, transferred to Reiho, and promised himself he would never let anyone close enough to find out again. Room 3B smelled like cedar and snow even before the door opened. A tall boy in a faded lacrosse jersey was doing pull-ups on the doorframe, muscles flexing, sweat darkening the back of his shirt. He dropped, landed silent, and looked at Kaito with eyes the color of winter river stone. "You are early," he said. His voice was low and even. "I am Renji Takamori, second year, captain of lacrosse." Kaito's throat closed. Alpha. The scent hit him like a wall - not the cheap, aggressive musk of the Alphas at his old university, but clean cedar, cold air, a hint of rain on skin. His suppressants were supposed to make him numb to this. They didn't. His knees softened and he had to grip the doorframe. "I am Kaito," he managed. "First year, literature." Renji looked at the single suitcase and frowned. Not judgment, just observation. "You don't have much." "I like minimal," Kaito lied. Minimal meant no photos, no scented shampoo, no evidence. Minimal meant forgettable. He had thrown away his peach-scented body wash, the one that matched his natural scent, and replaced it with unscented clinical soap that left his skin dry. Renji helped him without asking, lifting the suitcase onto the empty bed by the window with one hand. Their hands brushed. Kaito flinched so hard he nearly dropped the pill case. It clattered against the bed frame. Renji's eyes flicked to it, then away, polite enough not to ask. He didn't pick it up, just stepped back to give space. The room was small, two beds with a nightstand between, two desks, one bathroom. Too small. The distance between the beds was less than a meter. Kaito could already imagine the nights, the shared air, the danger. He had requested a single, been told there were none. "You will learn to live together," the housing lady had said brightly. "We have rules," Renji said, sitting at his desk. He opened a small notebook, efficient, the pages already half-filled with practice schedules and neat handwriting. "Quiet hours after eleven. No guests without asking. I practice at six AM, I will be quiet. You -" "I am quiet," Kaito said quickly. "I won't bother you. I study at night, but with headphones. I don't have guests." Renji studied him a second too long. Kaito was pretty in a way he hated - soft black hair that wouldn't stay neat no matter how he cut it, pale skin that bruised easily, lips that were too red, eyes that watered when he was nervous. He had chosen oversized hoodies and glasses with clear lenses to blunt it. It never worked. People looked anyway, and Alphas looked longer. "You are an Omega?" Renji asked, blunt. No cruelty, just direct. Kaito froze, blood draining from his face. The pill case burned in his pocket. He had rehearsed this. Deny, deflect, say Beta. "What - no," he blurted. Too fast. Too loud. Renji's expression didn't change. He didn't look disappointed or triumphant. "You smell like you are trying not to smell like anything. That is usually Omegas on blockers. Or Betas who are scared. I don't care which. I am asking because if you are, the dorm has extra filters. I can request them. And there is a separate clinic hour." The kindness was worse than accusation. Kaito stared at the floor, hands shaking, shame hot on his neck. He had expected disgust, not an offer to help. "I - I take medication," he whispered. "It's private. I have it handled." "Understood," Renji said. He closed the notebook. He didn't push. "I will request the filter anyway. For allergies. I do have cedar allergies in spring, it's not a lie. And I will not enter your space without knocking. We will be fine, Aizawa." He said it like a promise. Kaito nodded, not trusting his voice, and started unpacking with jerky hands, putting his unscented soap in the bathroom, his books on the desk, his one photo - his mother before she stopped calling - face-down in the drawer. That night Kaito lay on the narrow bed staring at the ceiling while Renji breathed evenly on the other side of the nightstand. The cedar scent was everywhere, in the sheets Renji had washed, in the air from the vent, in the towel hanging on the door. Kaito curled around his pillow, counting breaths the way the clinic taught him, in for four, hold for four, out for four, praying his medication held. Across the dark, Renji was awake too, staring at the same ceiling, wondering why his new roommate smelled like sugar and fear and why his own heart wouldn't slow down, and why he had already decided he would protect this stranger even if he never learned his secret. By morning, neither had slept, but the filter request had been submitted at 6:02 AM from Renji's phone. Renji had requested the single filter before, for a junior who left, he told the housing lady it was for dust, but now he was glad he knew how. He also thought about how Kaito's hands had shaken holding the pill case, and how he had wanted to say you don't have to hide that here, but didn't, because trust takes time. Later, when Kaito went to the bathroom to arrange his one suitcase, Renji texted his cousin: hey, do you still have that list of omega-friendly clinics near campus? No reason. Just asking. His cousin replied instantly: who is he? Renji stared at the phone and typed: no one yet. But he stared at the bathroom door longer than he should have. Renji closed his notebook and turned off his desk lamp, leaving only the filter's soft green light. Goodnight, Aizawa, he said, his cedar low. Goodnight, Kaito answered, and for the first time the word roommate felt less like a wall and more like a bridge he didn't know how to cross yet. He had not expected kindness. At his old university, kindness had always had a price, an Alpha wanting something in return. Renji asked for nothing, not even thanks, and that was what kept Kaito awake. The filter hummed and Renji's breathing evened. Kaito listened to it and thought, maybe this room could be more than a hiding place if he let it.
