Chapter Four

1065 Words
Waking up to an alarm at seven am in the morning is rough. But waking up at seven am and getting ready for school only to wait an hour to get picked up only to find out its a Saturday is even rougher. And thus, I ended up walking down to the Ocean. The waves echoing in my ears luring me home. The sand squishing in between my toes has me practically running to the dock. The need to shift an overwhelming feeling exploding throughout my whole body. Its been a while since I've gone swimming and today I was going to treat myself. The old rickety dock creaks underneath my body weight, the feeling of loose sand and small rocks dig into my flesh covered feet. Carefully listening for other peoples voices I carefully set myself down, my legs were thrown over the side of the dock only to swish around in the salty water. Humming a soft tune I squeeze my eyes shut on instinct imagining a long silver tail with beautiful golden stripes, a pink hue decorating my tail fin. And within a few seconds, my human legs were now an elegant tail many envied. My palms dig into the wooden dock as I propel myself forward into the water with a large splash. The water invaded my lungs as the salt burned my chapped lips almost in a welcoming way. Seaweed tickled my bare stomach as my hands instinctively flew behind me as I darted around getting used to my tail once again. Faltering for a moment I hear a loud screeching sound, a smile slips onto my lips when I recognize who it belongs to. My heart speeds up as I wait patiently for the mermaid to arrive. "Abrianna!" A loud laugh rumbles deep within when two small but very strong arms wrap themselves around me for a much-needed hug. I really was home. My best friends arms made anywhere seem like the best place to be. After a few moments, I gently tug myself away, making sure my hand stays within hers as we swim around randomly. Aimlessly chatting about the merfolk and their well beings. Aqua's response was almost immediate. It would have surprised me if I didn't know her better, she was infamous for getting any information she wanted to. But the sadness in her voice shocked me to my very core. "You're sad." She gives the brightest laugh she could muster, her voice was strong as she tried to convince me otherwise but when fighting a large scale war you interrogate the enemies to find information and from that, you learn how to know if someones lying or not. Knowing if I pushed my best friend any further shed just get angry at me I choose to say goodbye and find a different activity to preoccupy me. It didn't take long for me to find my old hangout spot. The colorful coral reef. A smile takes over my face as I recall my favorite memories. Running my hand over the rough structures I feel smooth metal against my palm. My thumb runs over the top and then up a long cord type object only to piece together it's a necklace. A locket to be more specific. The cold metal burned a hole in my hand as I swam around thinking of the many ways it could have ended up here. Deciding I've overstayed my welcome I swim back to the dock and pull myself up, the muscles in my arms tensing up ever so slightly. And quickly I shift back to my human form, my legs wobbly as I stand up. The locket still placed in my palm. But as I began to walk the path towards my home the feeling of someone watching my every move overcame me. My suspicions were confirmed when a loud twig snapped, there was no way a small animal could create that loud of a ruckus. Crouching my body down I get into an attack position, my hands ready to create water whips at any moment. "Woah! It's just me!" I frown slightly but quickly smile when the voice finally registers in my head who it is. I quickly pad my way over to the teen and wrap my arms around them. Lucas buries his nose in my neck as he continues to take, his breath tickling my neck. "My parents want to know if you would like to have dinner with us." I nod my head against his neck, letting my eyes close shut as we stand there for a few moments. "Good, cause I've been missing my mate." If only I could see the blush on his cheeks. "Would you like to change first?" I shake my head knowing I have clothes stashed around the woods and that i could just pick up some of them on the way over. "Alright love." And with that, we walk hand in hand over to their home. The feeling of sparks shooting through my hand giving me a feeling of comfort. I could hear Jeremy whispering sweet nothings into Laura's ear as Lucas escorted me into his most likely beautiful home. I smile thinking that just maybe, just maybe that could me and Lucas one day. Lucas grabs his parents attention as I slip my hand out of his, soft whimper passing from his wolf "Just in time for dinner!" I could hear the smile in the Alpha's voice as he guided me to my seat, he explained Laura was across from me and Lucas was at the end of the table and he would sit at the head as he was the Alpha. A few minutes into dinner the silent chatter was directed to me when my necklace hits the table. I had honestly forgotten about it cause I was enjoying Lucas' family so much "That's a very pretty necklace you have there. It looks familiar though." Laura exclaims. "Where did you find it?" "My old home." My answer seemed vague but I knew Laura understood what I was saying. "I'll tell you more after dinner." This caused her to drop the subject, I didn't want to reveal to Lucas that I was a mermaid just yet. I wasn't ready to put him in danger just yet. And that could quite possibly be the most selfish thing I've ever done.
