Isabelle’s world crumbled in a matter of days.

First, her mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The doctor’s words echoed in her ears like a death sentence, especially when he demanded a staggering ₦4 million for the life-saving surgery. Then came the eviction notice—Isabelle and her family were being kicked out of their apartment. As if that wasn’t enough, her younger brother Bryaan had just been informed he couldn’t resume school because they couldn’t afford his tuition.

It felt like the universe had turned its back on them.

Isabelle was drowning in hopelessness… until fate brought her to the Skyline Hotel, where she worked as a part-time server. That night, the hotel was buzzing with celebration—it was billionaire Shaan Adewale’s lavish birthday party. Lights, laughter, and luxury filled the space, but Isabelle’s heart was heavy.

Shaan noticed her, drawn by something more than just her beauty. One drink led to another, and by the end of the night, their inhibitions faded into a haze. They spent the night together—two strangers tangled in an unexpected moment.

The next morning, Shaan woke up to find Isabelle sleeping beside him, her face calm in the morning light. Something about her stirred something deep within him. He rose quietly, made himself a cup of coffee, and returned to the room—only to find her awake.

Isabelle saw a window of opportunity. Desperate, she gathered the courage to ask for ₦4 million to save her mother. Shaan stared at her—unsure if she was genuine or just another person after his money. Still, something in him refused to push her away. Instead of ₦4 million, he handed her ₦8 million—twice what she asked.

Isabelle was speechless. She left immediately and rushed to the hospital to settle the bills. But as she disappeared from his sight, Shaan found himself thinking about her again. Her grace, her eyes… and then he spotted her necklace on the bed. Gently, he picked it up and placed it in his drawer.

Three weeks later, Isabelle sat alone in the bathroom, staring in shock at the two red lines on the pregnancy test.

She was pregnant.

With a child that belonged to a man she barely knew.

What will she do now? And what happens when Shaan finds out?

Chapter. 1.crack.in.the.silence
Chapter One: The gentle sizzle of garlic and onions filled the modest kitchen, mixing with the scent of diced tomatoes simmering on the stove. Isabelle stood at the counter, wooden spoon in hand, stirring the pot of marinara sauce. Her long sleeves were pushed up to her elbows, and her curly hair was messily knotted at the top of her head. It was quiet. Almost too quiet for a Saturday. “Bryan!” she called out, raising her voice over the sound of the boiling pot. “Did you finish your math homework?” Silence. “Bryan!” she called again, a bit sharper this time. A muffled response came from the back room. “I’m working on it!” Isabelle sighed, rolling her eyes. “You better be.” From where she stood, she could see the edge of the living room. Her mom, Kristen, was lying on the couch, a blanket pulled over her legs, the TV glowing in the background. The volume was low, some rerun of an old sitcom playing. Lately, her mom had been sleeping more than usual. She looked thinner, paler, and tired all the time. Whenever Isabelle brought up seeing a doctor, her mom just waved her off. “Just stress,” she always said. “Let me rest, sweetheart.” But it never sat right with Isabelle. She gave the sauce one last stir, grabbed the kettle, and was just about to boil water for pasta when she heard it—a strange noise. A thump. Then a sharp cry. “Mama?” Isabelle dropped the kettle and ran into the living room. Her heart dropped. Her mom was on the floor. “Mom!” she yelled, rushing to her side. Kristen was curled up, clutching her stomach, her face contorted in pain. “Oh my God. Mom, what’s wrong? Can you hear me?” Kristen nodded faintly, sweat beading on her forehead. “It hurts… my stomach… burning—like a knife.” Isabelle crouched beside her, her hands shaking as she tried to lift her gently. “Okay. Okay. I got you. Just breathe. I’m right here.” Bryan, only twelve, peeked around the hallway corner, eyes wide with panic. “What happened to Mom?” “Go get my phone. It’s on the kitchen counter. Hurry!” Bryan darted away without another word. Isabelle tried to stay calm, but her own breathing had become shallow and quick. She cradled her mom’s head in her lap, running her fingers through her hair. “You’re going to be okay. I promise. Just hang on.” Bryan returned, handing her the phone with trembling hands. Isabelle dialed the first person she could think of—her best friend. “Jane, it’s me. I need your help,” Isabelle said breathlessly when the call connected. “My mom collapsed. I don’t know what’s wrong—can you come now? I need a ride to the ER.” “Of course!” Jane’s voice shot through the speaker. “I’m on my way. Five minutes.” Isabelle hung up and looked down at her mom, whose breathing had become shallow. “Hang in there, Mom. Help’s coming.” They reached the emergency room in record time. The bright, sterile hospital lights stung Isabelle’s eyes as she sat in the waiting area, her leg bouncing nonstop. Jane was beside her, gently rubbing her back. Bryan sat on the other side, fidgeting with the zipper on his hoodie, eyes glued to the floor. A nurse had wheeled Kristen away as soon as they arrived. It had been nearly an hour. Each passing second felt like a lifetime. “She's going to be okay,” Jane whispered, though the fear in her voice betrayed her words. Isabelle gave a tight nod, unable to speak. She blinked hard to hold back tears. Finally, a man in a white coat approached. His badge read Dr. Thomas Lee. “Isabelle Hayes?” She jumped to her feet. “Yes. That’s me. How is she?” Dr. Lee gave a small nod. “Your mother’s stable for now. We ran some tests.” “Okay. And?” Isabelle’s voice wavered. He exhaled, pausing. “We found a mass on her pancreas. It's likely a tumor—possibly cancerous. Based on her symptoms and the imaging, it looks advanced.” Isabelle blinked, stunned. “Cancer?” “Yes. Pancreatic. It explains the weight loss, fatigue, stomach pain. She’s showing signs of internal complications.” Bryan looked up, confused. “What does that mean?” Dr. Lee crouched slightly so he was at Bryan’s eye level. “It means your mom’s very sick, buddy. But we’re going to try our best to help her.” He turned back to Isabelle. “The best course of action is surgery, followed by aggressive treatment. The sooner we begin, the better.” “Okay,” Isabelle nodded quickly. “We’ll do it. Whatever it takes.” Dr. Lee hesitated. “There’s something else. The cost. Without insurance coverage, the surgery, recovery, and treatments will come out-of-pocket.” Isabelle’s stomach sank. “How much?” He sighed. “We estimate around $65,000 total.” She stared at him, unable to speak. $65,000? She barely made $12 an hour at the diner. Her savings account had less than $400. Jane stood up beside her, her hand on Isabelle’s shoulder. “Is there any kind of assistance—anything that could help?” “There are programs,” Dr. Lee said gently. “But approval takes time. Weeks, sometimes months. And she doesn’t have that kind of time.” Isabelle nodded faintly, her body frozen in place. “I—I just need a second,” she murmured, guiding Bryan and Jane away toward the hallway. Once they were out of earshot, Bryan looked up at her, eyes wide. “Are we gonna lose Mom?” Isabelle crouched in front of him, her voice breaking. “No. We’re not. I don’t care what I have to do—I’ll find a way. I promise.” As she hugged him tightly, her eyes met Jane’s. And that’s when the storm really began.
