Chapter 1
Whenever the moon was full, my fiancé, Colin Archer, turned into a cat.
He claimed he was ruled by animal instinct and couldn't bear to be tied down.
No matter how much I cried or begged, he kept finding new lovers.
Colin would always wipe away my tears and say innocently, "Come on, honey. I'm not exactly human. Don't you think you're being a little too hard on me?
"No matter how much fun I have out there, you'll always be my one and only wife."
When I caught him cheating yet again, he still refused to admit he was at fault.
"I already told you I can't control myself. I'm sick."
For the first time, I didn't cry or make a scene. I simply nodded along.
"You're right. I've expected too much from you all these years."
My sudden change in attitude surprised him.
But he didn't question it. Satisfied, he kissed my forehead.
"I knew my wife loved me most. I knew you'd understand."
I looked at him and smiled without a word.
What he didn't know was that I had already scheduled him for a neutering procedure.
The next full moon was in 7 days.
*****
"All right, Ms. Sutton. Your neutering procedure has been scheduled."
I had barely ended the call when Colin emerged from the bathroom.
Water dripped from his hair and traced the lines of his abs, making him look undeniably sexy.
I glanced at him and took a sip of water.
Colin had certainly taken excellent care of his body over the years.
He never skipped a workout or a run.
It was a shame he couldn't be nearly as disciplined about staying faithful.
"Honey, who were you talking to?"
Colin approached with a smile.
Lowering his lashes, he bent to kiss me.
The familiar scent of jasmine washed over me at once.
It was the signature fragrance worn by his assistant, Vera Finch.
Colin had expanded into overseas markets specifically to create that jasmine perfume for her.
He had poured tens of millions of dollars into developing a fragrance that would satisfy her.
After the formula was finished, I asked him for a bottle again and again.
Stubbornly, foolishly, I wanted proof that I was still the only woman in his heart.
He merely sighed and stroked my hair.
"Faye, you're too old for jasmine now.
"Be good, and stop picking on a younger woman."
I stood frozen in place.
I was only 3 years older than Vera. How did that make me old?
My lips parted, but as I looked at Colin's lovestruck expression, I couldn't bring myself to ask a single question.
Now, at last, I had found a way to punish this faithless man.
"I was just scheduling a procedure."
I spoke casually and pushed him away.
His brow furrowed at the rejection.
He picked up his phone and began replying to messages with practiced ease.
Without much interest, he asked, "What kind of procedure needs to be scheduled in advance?
"Never mind. If it isn't serious, don't bother telling me."
When I said nothing, he put down his phone.
After hesitating for a few seconds, he transferred me some money.
PayPal: You received 7,500 dollars.
Once the transfer went through, Colin put on his shirt and said, "I won't be home tonight. Remember to lock the door.
"If you're scared, leave the lights on and play some music. Don't interrupt my time alone with Vera."
I listened in silence, my hands slowly curling into fists.
Two weeks earlier, Colin had abandoned me in the middle of the night to go see Vera.
Rain had been pouring outside.
I had demanded hysterically to know why he was leaving.
"It's the middle of the night, and there's about to be a thunderstorm.
"You know I'm terrified of thunder. Why are you leaving me alone?"
Colin had frowned while getting dressed.
"Faye, when did you become so unreasonable?
"You're scared of thunder, but so is Vera. You can handle it. She can't.
"Be good, and stop making everything so difficult for me."
Then he slammed the door behind him.
I sat on the bed, staring blankly as tears streamed down my face.
The warmth beside me faded bit by bit, just like my heart going cold.
After the downpour came thunder and lightning.
Huge streaks of purple lightning tore across the night sky, terrifying in their intensity.
Trembling, I called Colin over and over again.
At first he rejected every call. Eventually, he blocked me.
By the time I wiped away my tears, his side of the bed had gone completely cold.
This time, of course, I wouldn't make the same mistake.
"Go ahead. Don't worry. I won't disturb you."
I gave him a gentle smile.
"Go. I'm not angry.
"Have fun."
Colin froze. He even lowered the phone he had been clutching the entire time.
"Why are you being so good today?"
He regarded me in surprise, one brow slightly raised and suspicion filling his eyes.
He instinctively took a few steps toward me, about to press for an answer, when a jarring ringtone cut through the room.
It was the custom ringtone he had chosen for Vera: Together, No Matter the Distance.
I had once asked Colin to set a special ringtone for me, but he had always refused.
He said I was deliberately invading his privacy.
Yet after falling for Vera, he had set one for her without being asked.
Colin instantly forgot all about me. He grabbed his keys and headed for the door.
"If you're going to be this understanding, I have nothing to worry about.
"I'm going on my date. Stay home like a good girl and wait for me. Don't wander off."
As I watched him leave without the slightest hesitation, I signed the electronic contract.
"No general anesthesia. A local anesthetic will be enough.
"I'll take responsibility if anything goes wrong. Don't worry. He won't die."
