The New Normal

307 Words
We spent the remainder of the day welcoming families, women and children who were scared and confused at the sudden threat that descended on our pack.  Late in the afternoon my father returned, looking even more disheveled than before.  I brought him dinner, and listened as he shared the news. "We received reports from our scouts that another of our allies, the Lunar pack has also been attached by this rogue army, 5 days ago.  Like the Horizon attack, it came without warning, and there were no survivors to spread the news.  It was discovered when the beta of another pack visited yesterday to finalize a trade agreement.  All of our allies have been alerted and are preparing for war just as we are.  Your courage in escaping that morning to spread this news has given not only our pack, but also our allies a chance to prepare and destroy these rogues."   As he ate, I detailed everything that we had done that day to prepare the packhouse. In the end, every member of the pack had a warm meal and place to rest their head for the nights to come.  The younger pups were being watched over by the older ones, the females were helping in the kitchens and laundry, and the warriors had a place to rest comfortably between their guard shifts.  While a far cry from normal, every pack member had a job to do, all working towards the same goal. As I finished recounting the days' events, my father put his hand on my cheek and whispered "There little one, now you must rest.  You have worked hard and your mother would be proud."  We ate the rest of our meal in silence, until my father returned to his office and I to the kitchen, where we each worked late into the night.
