The Vow

247 Words
The common room, usually so full of joy and laughter, pups playing games or young wolves flirting with potential mates, echoed with a deafening silence.  After what seemed like an eternity Andro, my father's beta, finally knelt down on one knee and spoke in a strong tone "I vow to protect the pack from these rogues with my life, and continue fighting until our Luna is avenged."  Others followed suit, until all of his warriors, every wolf in our pack, dropped to one knee and made the same oath.  The she-wolves and pups bowed their heads in respect, and even my wolf, who until now had been silent, recited the vow inside my head.  My father gave a small nod, and everyone began moving at once.  It was clear he had linked minds, ordering the wolves to begin preparations.  As movement and voices again filled the common room, my father took my hand and whispered "I know you are in pain, and no one has had a chance to grieve yet, but that time will come.  For now, we must be strong, and we must protect the pack.  It is what your mother would have wanted, and I will need your help in the days to come.  As our daughter, the pack will look to you for guidance, to pick up your mother's mantle and lead just as she did.  We will have a chance to mourn her properly, once we are all safe from this threat."
