S Bl S Series: Accidentally Yours. Chapter 1: The Coffee Catastrophe
Chapter 1: The Coffee Catastrophe
Eli was late, again. It wasn’t like he wanted to be. In fact, he hated it. But somehow, no matter how early he set his alarm, something always went wrong—whether it was the cat knocking over his coffee mug, his shoes mysteriously disappearing, or just one of those mornings when everything seemed to drag.
Today, his alarm had blared, but he’d accidentally hit snooze instead of off. That led to him scrambling through his morning routine, and now, there he was, in the middle of the street, watching the bus he needed pull away.
“Great,” he muttered, wiping a hand across his face. “Just great.”
He needed coffee, and fast. He wasn’t a coffee snob by any means, but a hot cup of caffeine was essential to keep him from turning into a full-on zombie at work. Luckily, there was a café just around the corner.
Inside, the aroma of freshly ground beans hit him like a wall of warmth. He sighed in relief and headed straight for the counter, ready to order his usual: a simple black coffee, nothing fancy. But today, something strange seemed to be in the air. Maybe it was the fact that he was still half-asleep, or maybe it was just the bizarre feeling of being completely off-track that day, but when he reached the counter, something weird happened.
A barista—an overly cheerful one, judging by the way she practically bounced behind the counter—called out, “One iced caramel macchiato with oat milk for Eli!”
Eli blinked, unsure whether she was talking to him or someone else. He didn’t order that. He didn’t even like caramel. He was about to clarify when the woman waved at him with a bright smile.
“Here you go!” She slid the drink over to him.
Confused, Eli grabbed the cup, thinking there had been some mix-up. But the barista was already turning away, and he couldn’t exactly argue with someone who looked so happy. He figured he’d just give it a try. Maybe it wasn’t so bad.
As soon as the cold drink hit his lips, however, he recoiled. The sweetness was overwhelming, like someone had taken sugar and poured it straight into his veins. His face twisted into a grimace, and before he even realized what he was doing, he had taken another sip, desperate to see if he could adjust to the shock of flavors.
Bad idea.
Eli let out a sharp cough and sputtered, nearly choking on the drink as it dribbled down the front of his shirt.
“Seriously?” he muttered, wiping his chin with the sleeve of his jacket. His morning was officially ruined.
Just then, a voice behind him broke his concentration.
“Hey, that’s my drink.”
Eli froze. Slowly, he turned around to see a tall guy standing there, arms crossed, looking somewhat annoyed. He had messy brown hair and a dark hoodie, but it was his piercing green eyes that Eli couldn’t seem to look away from.
“Sorry?” Eli said, his voice tinged with uncertainty. He glanced down at the cup in his hand, and then back at the guy. “I think there’s been a mistake. This isn’t mine.”
The guy raised an eyebrow. “That is mine. I ordered it ten minutes ago.”
Eli glanced down at the cup again. Sure enough, the name on it was Eli. But that was impossible—he hadn’t ordered this.
“Okay, so, uh… I guess we have a mix-up?” Eli said, gesturing between himself and the drink. He felt ridiculously awkward. “But I don’t like caramel, and I don’t—”
The guy didn’t seem impressed. He took a deep breath and shook his head. “Unbelievable,” he muttered, more to himself than to Eli. He stepped forward, reaching for the cup.
Eli quickly pulled it back. “I mean, I’m not gonna drink it,” he added, his cheeks turning red. He didn’t know why he was so defensive, but something about the situation felt incredibly ridiculous, and yet… kind of funny.
“Yeah,” the guy said dryly, “I can tell.” He gestured to the drink with a sarcastic smile. “That’s the second time someone’s taken my coffee this week. And this time, you don’t even like it.”
Eli frowned, starting to feel a little guilty. He looked down at the drink in his hand. “Okay, so I might have accidentally grabbed it. But it’s not my fault your name is the same as mine!”
The guy’s expression softened a little, and Eli noticed the faintest glimmer of amusement in his eyes.
“Well, at least you didn’t drink it all,” the guy said, holding out his hand. “I’m Nate.”
Eli hesitated for a second, then handed over the cup. “Eli. And yeah, not gonna lie, this stuff is way too sweet for me.”
Nate took the cup from him, and as he did, their fingers brushed for a moment. It wasn’t anything dramatic, but the brief contact made Eli’s heart skip.
“Guess I’ll try to enjoy it,” Nate said with a wry smile. “But next time, please check the name before you steal my coffee, alright?”
Eli chuckled, his nerves starting to settle. “No promises, but I’ll try.”
Nate gave a mock salute. “Good enough.”
As Eli started to turn and head for the door, he heard Nate call after him, “Hey, Eli—next time, I’ll be the one grabbing your coffee.”
Eli stopped in his tracks and turned back, trying to play it cool. “If you do, I’ll make sure to actually like it.”
Nate grinned. “Looking forward to that.”
Eli couldn’t help but smile as he walked out of the cafe. It was funny how one accidental coffee mix-up could end up being the start of something… well, maybe not so accidental after all.
