The New student!
The New Student
Monday mornings had never been Amara’s favorite.
She walked through the school gates with her bag over one shoulder, watching groups of students gather around the courtyard. Everyone seemed to be talking about something, but Amara wasn’t interested in joining the gossip. She had enough things to worry about at home.
She headed toward her classroom and took her usual seat near the window. Her best friend, Lina, dropped into the chair beside her.
“You’re early today,” Lina said.
Amara smiled. “I didn’t want to be late.”
Before Lina could answer, their teacher entered the classroom. Behind her stood a boy Amara had never seen before.
The room immediately became quiet.
“This is Kai,” the teacher said. “He’s a new student. I expect everyone to make him feel welcome.”
Kai nodded politely and looked around the classroom. His expression was calm, but there was something about him that made Amara curious. He didn’t look nervous like most new students would.
The teacher pointed toward the empty seat beside Amara.
“Kai, you can sit there.”
Amara’s eyes widened slightly.
Kai walked over and sat down beside her.
“Hi,” he said quietly.
“Hi,” Amara replied.
For the rest of the lesson, she tried to concentrate on her work. But she couldn’t help noticing that Kai barely spoke to anyone.
When the bell rang, students rushed out of the classroom.
Kai remained seated.
Amara looked at him. “Aren’t you going to lunch?”
He hesitated before answering.
“Maybe later.”
There was something strange in his voice.
Amara didn’t know it yet, but meeting Kai would change much more than her school routine.
It would lead her toward a secret her family had been hiding from her for years.
