Surreal Moments

If there was one thing Uncle Jack loved the most, it was his beauty sleep. Oh, how much he loved it and hated being disturbed! We all knew better than to wake him up during his sleep. No matter how urgent it was, he wouldn’t get up. It was however shocking to see him join me downstairs alongside his wife and the saucy Susan. My heart became void of the strength to pump blood into my heart and for a second, I thought I would collapse. I felt knots in my stomach and no, it wasn’t butterflies but fear and anxiety. I wasn’t sure I had heard correctly. “Murder? I….. I didn’t do anything. I did not murder anyone.” I tried to say but my voice was inaudible. I still found it difficult to grasp what they had just said. How did they even come to that conclusion? “You do not cease to amaze me everyday, Raven. How could you even think of such a thing? How could you think of murdering someone?” Uncle Jack asked. My eyes had become teary and I still found it so hard to grasp. My heart hammered against my chest and if the floor could open up, I would not consider it an option but the only way out because I was certain my uncle would turn me in and would not believe a word out of my mouth. So I thought but deeply, I prayed he would not agree with them. Before I could say a word, I was whisked away… like a criminal and not one of them tried to save me. Instead, uncle Jack looked like he could not wait for me to leave so he could return back to his sleep and for his wife and child, it was good riddance. I was locked up…. Shivering and burning in the cold dungeon. It still did not make any sense to me. I hoped Owen would come around and get me out of the hellhole I was dumped in. Flies and insects made the night pretty horrible and I doubted if I was going to be able to survive that night. I waited…. I waited for hours. Till it was Dawn and then morning. I waited for Owen to come around, to probably assure me that he would save me from where I was locked in. I did not steal anything neither did I kill anyone? Who was dead? The lady I caught him, the Alpha making out with? I couldn’t sleep even when my eyes became quite heavy. “where is the Alpha’s son? Does he know I am here?” I asked the guard who served me 'breakfast' the next morning. He had a stoic expression and instead, ignored me before walking out. Staying in there would do me no good. Neither the guards nor the maids answered each time I asked if the Alpha’s son knew I was there. Instead, they had sad faces and no one was willing to tell me who died or what happened. “Please, tell me… is he okay? Is the Alpha’s son okay? Who are they mourning?” I gripped one of the maids the moment she served me dinner. Her eyes were laden with fear and terror as though she was scared I would kill her. I immediately let go of her and decided to wait. No matter how busy he could be, I knew he would make out time to want to see me. Seconds rolled into minutes and minutes into hours yet there was nothing. There was no news from him neither did he come around. I could not get my mind off the fact that something was off. My instincts does not lie and when it made me feel something was wrong, I knew for a fact that something was wrong but I could not pinpoint it. I knew I had to figure out a way to get out of the hellhole and see him. Making him understand I did nothing wrong and did not murder anyone was my priority at that point. I had to figure out a way to escape. Night was creeping in and the guards had fallen asleep. I had tried to think and think so hard for a solution but nothing was coming up. I was beginning to dose off to sleep when I suddenly heard footsteps approaching. The minute my ears captured the sound, I sat up immediately. Could it be Owen? The footsteps eventually stopped and there was…. No one. The hair on my skin rose immediately as shivers ran down my spine. None of the guards woke up and I could sense a mysterious aura surrounding whoever it was. I felt the strong urge to yell out to the guards to wake up but just whoever it was heard my thoughts, I heard 'her' whisper 'be quiet'. From her voice, I could tell it was a woman. She was covered from head to toe and I could not see any part of her neither could I tell who it was. She unlocked the door to the dungeon and halted. I was still in denial and I had to pinch myself multiple times to be sure I was not hallucinating or making things up. “Run. Run away as fast as you can.” She uttered before walking away from me, quickly like the wind. I tried to stop her but she jumped off the window and ran away as soon as she could. The guards were still asleep and I reminisced on what she had said. There was no way I could run away. Leaving Owen was impossible. Quickly, I ran out of the dungeon and headed to Owen’s room. Thankfully, the windows were open. I knew for a fact that his father could not be there at that time of the night hence I jumped in. To my dismay, he had his back turned to the window and his face buried in his hands like he had no life. “Owen.” I called softly and he shot his head up, his back turned to me. “I expected you…. I waited for you all through the day and … I did not see you. I was worried something might have happened to you and that is why… “ I let out a sigh. “You know the Alpha thinks….” “Who let you out?” He turned to look at me and a gasp escaped my lips. His eyes were bloodshot red. “Your eyes…. What happened to them?” I probed and tried to examine it but he pushed me off, causing me to slam my head against a vase. My vision got blurry for a couple of seconds as thick liquid gushed down my face. “Son….. what is it?” Alpha Ronnie barged into the room but froze on seeing me and then looked at his son. “The guards are doing a poor job. How could they even let such a despicable murderer go?” Owen questioned his father. It felt so surreal. If a thousand priests had told me such a thing would ever happen, I would have denied and I… still found it difficult to believe. Was I dreaming or probably hallucinating? “Guards!” The Alpha called immediately and they trooped in like they had been waiting for that moment. “Pick this murderer and lock her in the deepest part of the dungeon.”
