I was finally off work for a day! I went back the next day. I could clear my head about the merman for a bit. But here I found myself at the beach. Watching over the ocean waves thinking about the merman. Was he wanting to hurt me? Or had he wanted to connect with me?
Why me?
Did it have to do with my birth mother and this necklace? Did he know my birth mother? I always hoped one day I would find her and maybe fine out why she had given me up.
Did I have any siblings out there? Was anyone wanting me? Missing me? Was a part of a family not really whole because I was gone?
I loved my adopted family. But I was sure deep down each kid who knew they were adopted had these questions and felt the same way I did right now. How could a merman know about me? Was this why I was feeling so connected to the ocean?
I sigh as I sit down in the sand. I run some warm soft sand in between my fingers. I really needed time to think over things. My cell phone rings. Normally when I was thinking at the beach, I would ignore it. But it was Gary calling me. It had to be about the merman!

"Gary?" I answer his call.
I hear a clanging noise.
"Hey, we need you here now!" he orders to me.
I sigh. "But today is my day off" I groan.
"It is the merman. We can't get him to eat. We think you can" he begs me. "You two have a connection. None of us have made one with him. Please can you come in?" he begs me.
"I don't know" I mutter.
"Please, otherwise his vitals will go down and we will have to drug him again" he warns me.
I really did not want them to have to keep drugging that poor merman. "Fine. I will be there as soon as I can" I mutter.
"Great! Please hurry!" I hear him beg before I hang up on him.
I place my phone in my purse and then I head out on my way to my car there in the parking lot. I head on over driving to the aquarium.
I get there then head into where the merman was located. I had to use my work badge and clock in. There was no way I was doing this for free. Gary was going to pay me over time for having to merman sit.

"I am here!" I call out. I see Gary yelling at workers. The merman was having himself a fit.
I had an idea. My neck feels warmth. I glance down as I tuck my necklace back under my work shirt I had changed into in the bathroom when I came in. I walk up where Gary was with the others. A wave of water splashes at us. I scream feeling surprised by the power of this being. The same one Gary called weak. He certainly was not weak this merman.
"Gary!" I call out. He almost did not notice me. "Gary!" I yell. "I am here" I tell him.
He sees me. "Thank god. Please do something" he begs me.
"On one condition" I tell him.
"What?" he wonders.
"Leave me alone with the merman" I demand.
"What are you crazy?" Gary snaps at me.
I shake my head. "You said so yourself. There is a connection, so let me be alone with him, let me get him to eat" I beg him. "If I am in any danger I can yell" I promise him.
Gary sighs then nods. He hands me a bucket of fish. "Go for it" he says.
"I want everyone gone. Everyone. Only me in here" I warn him sternly.
Gary nods. "Come on men" he orders his crew.
"She is nuts if she thinks she can get him to mind" a worker laughs at me as they head out of there.
I take the bucket of fish then sit on the wooden platform. The merman glares at me from below.
"Hey!" I speak up.

He looks the other way.
"You know you need to eat" I tell him. "You can die if you don't"
I bet he missed his home. The ocean. Where his family was. His friends. Were there more of him out there? Was that it? Was he worried they would find the others and capture them? I did not blame him if he was worried. I had to help this merman. But I did not know how to do that.
"I had to come here on my day off to feed a merman. What a crazy story huh? No one would believe me if I told them" I start talking. Maybe he could not talk.
Maybe he did not even understand me.
My necklace was getting so warm nearly hot as I inch closer to the merman. I glance down at him. His necklace was glowing as well.
At the same time. There had to be a connection. I had to know what was going on. This was my chance. Or I was never going to know. It was now or never.
"Hey, you, do you know anything about this necklace? It belonged to my birth mother who I never knew. I was adopted and all that was left to me was this necklace" I tell him as I take it out of my shirt. He is finally looking at me wide eyed now. He looked almost excited.
I get my walkie talkie. From my back pocket. "Gary come unchain him. He can't connected being chained" I demand on the walkie talkie.
"How are you in there? Are you okay?" Gary demands to know.
"I am perfectly fine. He is not going to hurt me. Unchain him if you want me to get him to eat" I snap.
"Be right there" Gary says. "I will send in someone to free him" he answers back.
"Okay sir, we will free you a bit. If you eat. And tell me where this necklace comes from" I tell the merman. I hide the necklace back under my shirt as a worker comes in. He was wearing scuba gear. He swims down to the merman once he dove in. Then he unchains the merman. He swiftly swims back up in a hurry.
"You are crazy to mess with that thing" the worker warns me before he leaves me alone with the merman.
The depressed merman stays sunk under the waters even though he is no longer chained.

"Hey, come talk to me. I have some food for you to" I demand to the merman. "Come eat!" I say.
I finally was about to give up. I toss a dead smelly fish to him below. It lands right beside him. He glares up at me. Then grabs the fish with his hand. He tosses it back up. Water and the fish hit me in the head.
"OW!" I wince as I rub my head.
He swims up to the surface. Right beside me. His intense ocean eyes study mine.
"I don't eat friends" he finally says to me.
"So, you do understand me. What do you eat Mr. Merman?" I tease.
He frowns. I hear him say "Seaweed!", but I do not see him move his lips.
"How did you do that? I could hear you" I stammer feeling uneasy now.
His hands are resting on the platform he was so close to me now. Water dripped on me from him to my pant legs. He was starring into my eyes as though he was studying me. His necklace glowed.
Mine did to. He reaches over to touch me. His hand rests on my chin his long fingers had webs in between them. Little ones. He forces me to look in his eyes not at his hands. He notices the necklace.
He grabs it with his hand. I gasp. I grab it to. Our hands due over it. He had no right to it. My birth mother left me that. He was not getting it! I loved that necklace. It meant the world to me. It was a mystery. A beautiful one.

"That belongs to me! My mother gave that to me!" I snap at him with anger. He yanks the necklace off my neck.
"That necklace belongs to my people. Not you! You are not of my kind. You are not Princess Elissa" he warns me. "You are a human" he tells me. He uses his powers to talk to me. His lips do not move the whole time he did.
"How did you know my name?" I demand to him.
He turns the necklace. I see on the bottom it glows Elissa. "Someone must have thought your name was Elissa. You are an imposter" he tells me. "Elissa would know where she came from. You are not her" he states.
"What on earth are you talking about? Of course, I am Elissa. I always have been. Not even you can tell me otherwise!" I was angered by this know it all merman.
He was taking away the one thing that was mine. My birth right!
"I know Elissa. We were born the same time. And we lost her. You are not Elissa. She would not have forgotten her people" he snaps at me before sinking back into the waters.
"Give me that back! Right now! That belongs to me!" I snap with anger at him. "Give me that back" I demand.
"Elissa what on earth is going on?" Gary wants to know as he comes rushing in.
I groan. I could not tell him. Gary would not understand what was going on.
• ❤︎ •• ❤︎ •
I did not understand. "Gary, he eats seaweed. Alright? Get some freshwater seaweed. You were nearly making the man eat his friends" I snap at him. I toss Gary the bucket of fish with my hand once I stand up. I get down off the platform.
I look over at the depressed merman. "This is not over. I will get my necklace back" I warn him softly as our eyes meet.
"It does not belong to you imposter!" he snaps at me with his telepathically powers.
I fume inside then rush out of there. The merman was pissing me off. He was arrogant. A know it all.
And I could not stand him nor could I be of any help to him. I would be back. Only to get my necklace back. That was mine. I knew it deep inside. He could never take that away from me!
