As Blue As The Ocean!

Chapter Ten

I was at work early once more. As I had promised Kavan that I would be there. And I meant every word. I had not gotten much sleep that night. I worried about Kavan, and his fate here. I worried that something bad was going to happen to him if he was not returned to the ocean. He belonged in the ocean. So, he could look for his mystery princess. A princess whom he was meant to be with.

Even though he could never be with someone like me I truly wanted what was best for him. I wanted to help Kavan. I had to talk to Kandice. See if I could get her to help me with this idea I was having.

We had to free Kavan. Before the government decided to come take him away and do awful experiments on him. They would treat Kavan ten times worse than they were here at the aquarium. I could not allow that to happen.

I find Kandice in the break room. Getting ready for a day's work. We were already packed full. People were hoping to learn more on our handsome merman. But they were not going to get to see him today. No way.

They might never get to see him if the government had their way with things. I was so worried. Once we got Kavan back to the ocean then I would be able to sleep at night. I would feel better about the whole thing.

"Kandice!" I breath out.

I grasp at her arm to get her attention.

"How is Mr. Merman today?" she wants to know.

I pull her aside.

"I am about to go see him here soon. I have something to ask you" I begin to say.

She nods. "Alright? What is going on?" she wants to know.

"We need to rescue Kavan" I tell her.

"Who? Who needs to be rescued?" she mutters.

I look around us to make sure no one could hear us. "We need to break the merman free. Kavan" I tell her. "Otherwise something bad might happen" I say to her in a hushed tone.

"Are you nuts?" she squeaks out. "I mean are you nuts?"

"I am not!" I snap back at her.

"Listen he is heavily guarded. No way are they going to let him get taken from here" she warns me. "you are going crazy" she tells me.

"But we have to do something! The government will come take him from us and then what? They could kill him to figure him out and make more of him. I will be damned if I will let that happen to him" I warn her. "I have to stop this! They have gone to far!" I warn her.

"Yes, I agree they are going way to far. But there is no way in hell we are going to be allowed to be close enough to take the merman out of here" scoffs Kandice.

I smirk. "Well I got close enough to kiss him" I brag.

Her eyes grow wide. "What? You kissed the fish man?" she gasps with shock.

I nod. "Well he kissed me" I giggle.

"How was it?" she wants to know.

I blush. "It was something" I mutter softly as I think back on the kiss.

"Hey! Elissa you are needed in the back" I hear Gary speak up from behind us causing me to jump.

"Oh sure, I will be right there" I tell him. "Think over what I said. He needs us. We are his last hope" I point out to her as sternly as I could. I hoped she would give in and help me. I could not do this all alone.

I follow Gary to the back where Mr. Merman was waiting for me. I see poor Kavan sunk down below his tank when I come in. The kiss flashes in my mind. My cheeks feel a warm glow to them. I make my way up to the top of the tank.

The others leave me alone with him. I had to talk to him. And maybe we could hatch out a plan to free him. And after that if Kandice agreed to go along and help me then it would all work out.

"Kavan!" I call down to him. "I came. As I promised" I remark.

"So, you did. Human" he answers me.

I hand him a tupperwear full of seaweed. He eats like a starved man. Then eats another once I have one ready. My heart races as I try to find the right words to tell him about my idea. I hoped he would like it. And maybe he would like me a little bit more after it. He had to like me after I rescued him, right?

"Kavan?" I say softly.

"Yes human?" he asks me.

"I have an idea" I begin to say.

"It will never work" he mutters.

"Huh?"

"I can read your mind human. Most of you I can read minds. It is not hard. You mean well but they will catch you. You can't free me" he says to me.

"You know?" I giggle.

He nods. "They will never let me go" he warns me. "this place is heavily guarded"

"I know. I am sorry" I sigh. "so, you knew yesterday to?"

He nods. "I knew human. Thanks though for being concerned for me" he says. "you are probley the only one around here who does" he mutters. "they could care less. I am a thing to hold onto. A prize" he grumbles.

"Kavan there has to be something I can do" I say.

He shakes his head. "It is hopeless" he answers me.

My heart was breaking for him. I hated this.

He hands me something then places it in my hand.

"What is this?" I ask him.

"You can keep it" he says to me.

It was my necklace. He gave it back to me. The necklace glowed in my hand as I hold it. This meant so much to me. He was giving me the necklace back. Even though it might not even be mine. It belonged to the princess of the sea not me.

"Are you sure?" I say softly.

"To remember me by" he says.

"What are you talking about? To remember you by?" I ask him.

"They are talking about moving me some where other than here. We might not see each other again" he warns me. "I overheard the men talking"

"They are? Who are they?" I demand to know.

"As you told me. The government is coming for me" he warns me.

"No" I breath out.

He nods. "I am so sorry, but it is so" he says to me.

I feel my heart breaking inside.

I clutch the necklace.

"No there has to be something we can do" I say to him.

"Try not to worry. Somehow we might meet again someday" he tells me.

He reaches up and touches my chin with his webbed hand. Our eyes look deeply at one another. I feel as though I am almost in a love drunk spell over him. What was he doing to me?

His eyes fall on my lips. I knew he was thinking of the kiss we shared. I could not help but long to kiss him again. Why was I so drawn to this mystery man? There was so much to him.

"Kiss me" I hear him in my mind. He was talking to me so no one else could hear us. I nod yes. I lean in. My lips swoop down kissing his in return. My heart races. What was I doing? This was crazy. But these feelings were so real between us.

They were raw. They were real. They were there. After our kiss ends, he smiles at me. "To remember me by" he tells me. "Goodbye Elissa. Take care" he tells me.

"This can't be goodbye" I tell him out loud as tears come to me.

He smiles sadly at me then sinks back down into the waters. I can only see his necklace glow as he goes down.

"Kavan" I call to him.

I sigh. This was so unfair.

I head out of there. Tears in my eyes. This was all unfair. All of it! Later that night I could not sleep. Kavan was all I could think about. Kandice kept trying to call me. But I could not talk to her. I was not in the mood.

She would not agree to help me with Kavan anyway. I toss and turn in bed. I wore my necklace he gave me. Wondering what he was doing. Worrying over him. Suddenly my necklace begins to glow brightly.

That was truly odd. Because the necklace only glowed when I was near Kavan. I get up and rush over to the window. I could see the ocean from my bedroom. I glance but nothing.

Just the moonlight was shimmering on the beach shore. Silly to think maybe a merman escaped and was out at sea. I sigh. I pace the floors. I had to relax. Get some sleep. Finally, I managed to fall asleep.

Then the next day I get some seaweed ready for Kavan. In case he was still there at the aquarium. There was a commotion going on. Some crowd was gathered around. There was a police there to. I find Kandice. I see her talking to some of the other workers there. I had to know what was going on here.

"What is going on? Why is the police here?" I ask her.

"Did you break Kavan out of there last night?" she demands to know.

I frown. "No, I was home all night last night. What are you talking about?" I ask her. "Kavan is missing?" I ask.

She nods. "Someone broke in here and freed him" she warns me. "I was sure you did it"

"No, I did not free him. I had nothing to do with it" I tell her.

"Well crap they were asking me about it. I told Gary you asked me to help free him" warns Kandice.

"You sold me out? And I never did it?" I gasp.

"I am sorry. When they said that I assumed it was you!" she says in alarm. "I never meant to hurt you in it all"

"Well you did. Now they will fire me" I warn her.

I was screwed now!

"Come with us" orders Gary once he sees me there.

Gary leads me to the back room. Sure, enough Kavan was gone.

"We have you on tape here. You freed the merman last night" Gary tells me. "where is he?" he demands to know.

"I did not do any such thing! I was home last night in bed" I argue with him.

He leads me over to where the surveillance cameras were. He plays a tape. Sure, enough there I was on the screen. Freeing MR.MERMAN! I gasp. I gawk at the screen. I make Gary play it again.

I was the only one breaking in. I knock out the guards. With superpowers I did not know I had. I was enraged as I storm in. I swim down below. And sure, enough as he fast forwards the tape I free the merman.

"How could I? I do not remember any of this!" I exclaim to Gary. "That was not me!" I argue.

"That clearly was you on the screen. You broke in you knocked out the guards. You stole our merman" snaps Gary. "and you are going to jail"

They were not going to send me to jail for something I did not do or could not do right?

An officer comes in. They cuff me after reading me my rights. I was in big trouble. For something I did not even do. Now what?
