Chapter 32When I arrive at work the next day, I feel hungover, my head a catacomb of staticky white noise. I am on desk duty, answering phones and dispatching officers to the outskirt of town for calls of disputes and someone’s missing dog. Officer Givens stops at the front desk before heading out on patrol with another officer, interrupting my quiet corner of the world with flippant chitchat about her family. Her act is phony, and I can see right through it. I do not want to talk to her, so I keep my back to her as she hangs out in the doorway leading into the corridor, making small talk with herself. As if she’s forgotten about our last quarrel, or maybe she’s moved on, but she seems different. Friendlier. Maybe I should make amends and let it go. But I can’t. Maybe Chief Barnaby
