Chapter 37The nurse returns later to tell us that the doctor is with another patient. “I have my orders to bring you upstairs for more tests.” “What kind of tests?” I ask. She looks at me and then at Steve. “CT scan and MRI.” She talks as if I am not in the room. “Dr. Wilson wants to check out your chest, lungs, and brain.” “Sounds serious,” Steve says. I grab his hand. “It’ll be all right.” “I don’t want to go alone,” he says, panic rising in his voice and face. I look at the nurse, but she shakes her head, rolling a wheelchair to where we sit by the window. “Family members aren’t allowed inside the examination rooms.” I nod at Steve, who looks scared, his eyes moist, lips quivering. “I’ll wait outside,” I tell him. “Let’s go,” the nurse says, reaching out for Steve’s arm and help
