Chapter One: An Ordinary Day
I sip on my drink, 'Talking To The Moon' was being played on the stereo for the fifth time this week, I reach over to lower the volume of the radio. My cellphone began to ring. I halted at a red light and answered the call. "Hey, little sis, how's everything?" Laura said my older sister, the genius one of the family, was studying at Harvard University for her law degree. "Hey, Laura um well, it's already been two months since my first semester of college started. And this city is pretty big." I said as a smile formed my pink-tinted lips. "I know it must be hard trying to adjust to a whole different city but look at the bright side you made friends, you got the perfect grades, you're safe there." Laura said I let out a sigh "I guess you're right," I look up to see the light had changed to green. "I'll call you later, alright," I said, hanging up. I continued my drive to the apartment. I'll get used to this new lifestyle, but for now, I'm homesick, I miss my family, my old friends, my old room, I miss everything.
I arrived at the apartment I was renting. I look at the time on my phone at 7:30 pm. I parked at my usual parking spot and checked for mail at the front desk. "Mitzi, a young man came by looking for you earlier." Mrs. Kim said, handing me my letter; I give her a small smile, "Thank you, Mrs. Kim, have a good night." I said before heading to the elevator. I look to see a letter from one of my older brother, the elevator doors open I stepped inside, pressed floor four, I put my mail in my bag as the doors slide close. I lean against the wall with my arms crossed.
I was tired; today was an exhausting day. I need to look for a new job working at the bar is just not for me. I let a sigh escape my lips. I reached my stop and walked out of the elevator. I took my keys out, unlocked the door of my apartment, and stepped inside. I close the door behind me. I placed my things on the coffee table. I grabbed my laptop and began to search for jobs that aren't at a bar, Ji Yoon's Cafe open positions, salary: $12 per hour, apply for the post.
I look at the time 8:30 pm, I look at the screen, and I clicked apply your application has been sent, I close my laptop. I took my books out and began to study like any other night. You'll get used to this, just hang in there.
6:00 am
I grab my keys and phone as I walk out of the apartment. I lock the apartment door before heading towards the elevator, "Good morning." I look up to see my neighbor Eunwoo. I give him a faint smile, "Oh, good morning Eunwoo." I said as we both stepped inside the elevator. "Still having sleeping problems?" He asked, pressing floor one, the elevator doors slide shut. I gently rub my eyes, letting a chuckle leave my lips, "Are my bags that noticeable?" I asked, he smiles, "A little bit." He said the elevator doors slide open.
"Well, I'll see you around." Eunwoo said, walking in the opposite direction, "Bye-bye." I said, heading to my car well, it was Laura's Grey Mercedes Benz, but on my eighteenth birthday, it became my car. I fasten my seatbelt. Just as I was about to drive away from the parking lot, my phone started ringing. The caller ID made me feel nauseous and pale. I inhale and exhale, trying to keep myself calm. I decided to ignore the call and continue with my morning.
"Music access will now play KARD's, Oh na na " I turn the volume up a bit as 'Oh na na' by KARD began to blast through the speakers, it was a two-hour drive from where I lived to the university. The building of Seoul National University came into view.
I close the car door, "Mitzi!" I turn around to see Yena and Sanha. I lock my car before walking over to them, "Hey, you guys." I said with a small smile, "Don't hey us, M...you promised that we'd hang out last night, but you never showed up." Sanha said with arms crossed over his chest. It hit me like a brick I forgot about the little hang out we were supposed to do last night. I let out a small gasp and place my hands on my head in disbelief "I'm so sorry, I forgot about our hang out. I'm so sorry, guys." I said, placing my hands in the pockets of my coat.
"Doyeon is mad at me, isn't she?" I asked nervously, "Pissed off...we're all pissed." Sanha said, I look at Yena, "What made you forget about our plans?" She asked with interest in what my answer will be. A sigh left my lips "I studied till 2 am, and I was applying for a new job." I said as we started walking to class. "So, you're finally quitting that shitty job at the bar?" Sanha asked. I nodded my head, "Yep, I can't stand working there anymore." I said, "Who wouldn't that place had men who act like pigs towards the women who work there." Yena said with a huff.
"Mitzi!" I felt terrified when I heard my name. I look at Sanha and Yena. We turn to see a very pissed off Doyeon, "Doyeon, before you go all psycho on Mitzi, she's got a good explanation for why she didn't show up last night." Sanha said, shielding me from our psycho looking friend.
"Alright, what's this 'good explanation' that you got?" Doyeon said, crossing her arms over her chest. "I studied all night, and I was applying for a new job because I'm sick of working at the bar," I said as I pull her in a hug. "I'm sorry for not showing up." I said Doyeon lets out a sigh, "So you finally decided to quit that stupid shitty job...good you're too naive for that job anyway." She said with a smile. I look at her with disbelief, "Am not." I said we walk to class.
"So, there's a party happening at my brother's place tonight." Doyeon said I look at her, "Shh, the professor hasn't finished yet." I whispered she rolled her eyes, "Just tell me once the lesson is over." I whispered, she smiles while shaking her head softly. When the professor ended his lesson, everyone except Doyeon left, "There's a party happening tonight at my brother's house." She said I close my bag. "And," I said, standing up, she scoffed, "You're coming with us." She said as we walk out of the classroom.
"Whose us? I asked she hits my shoulder playfully. "You, me, Yena, Sanha, Yeji, Hyunjin, Ryujin, Seungmin, and Eunwoo." Doyeon said, I look at her, "Eunwoo?" I asked, confused, is she talking about my neighbor Eunwoo or someone else? "Your neighbor...he's in one of our classes." She said, What?! How did I not noticed him before? "Really? I never noticed that he was in our class." I said we walk to the picnic tables. "That's because your head is always in that dumb textbook." She said, sitting down, "Hey, you two." Seungmin said as he sits down next to Doyeon.
"Hey, Seungmin." I said I place my bag on the table "So you are coming to the party night?" He asked. I look at him with a stern look. "No," I said, looking away. "Why not?" Sanha asked, sitting down, "Because parties just aren't my things." I said Hyunjin and Yeji sat down next to me. "So you rather just sit in that apartment and read books?" Yena asked. I nodded my head. "Ha, you're not going to though, you're coming with us, and that's final," Ryujin said, placing a bag of chips in front of me.
A sigh escaped my lips. "Come on, Mitzi...my brother is turning nineteen today, and I want you to meet him and a couple of our other friends." Doyeon said with a pout, I look at them, "You're part of our group now, and we want you to know everyone in the group." Sanha said, patting my shoulder, I look at him. "Ugh! Alright, but if something bad happens, I will run out of that party since my life depends on it." I said, Doyeon smiles.
"Okay...the party starts at 8 pm, but we want to get there before it gets crowded, so we'll see you at 7 pm," Hyunjin said, typing away on his phone. My phone buzzed. I look to see that Hyunjin had sent me the address of the party. "See you there, M," Yeji said, leaving the table with Hyunjin. "Class is gonna start soon we get going," Seungmin said I grab my bag and follow Doyeon to class.
Ugh! Parties I never liked parties I mean my family has thrown and attended many parties, but because relatives also threw them. Of course, I had to go I guess going to a party where unfamiliar people will be there makes me nervous and scared of what will happen.
