Chapter Two: Good Morning, Venus

I snuggled into the warm fur of the dog that came up to me when I got home from work. I groaned softly, rubbing his chest absentmindedly as I tried to go back to sleep. I don't remember anything after I passed out. I remember waking up to someone banging harshly on my door. I groaned hard and rubbed my face. It was too damned early for this. I love my brother, but sometimes he's too much. He pushed past me and into my apartment, and I closed the door behind him. He stiffened when he saw that I had a dog in the apartment with me. "Morning to you too, Adonis. Now, what?"

I asked, not really awake, since I hadn't had my coffee yet. The dog I had picked up last night after work stilled and growled at my brother, who turned to face me.

"Venus, why do you have this f*****g mutt in your goddamn apartment?! She is not allowed here!"

I yawned as I passed him, going into my kitchen, that giant dog following me on my heels. I started to make my coffee as my brother made to stand in the doorway.

"That's a boy dog, Adonis. And the office isn't open yet for me to go talk to you as the property manager about keeping him. Don't worry, I just got a really good job and can afford the pet deposit now."

I waved him off. He let me stay here free of charge, but I always tried to pay him. He refused to see me homeless, and I always tried to help him in any way I could. As long as if I was asked, I paid the bills, he let me stay here free of charge, anyway.

"Do you want some coffee, bro?"

I asked as I poured my own cup, not turning to see the two in my apartment staring darkly at each other.

"Not this morning, dear one. Just... Bring that f*****g mutt to the office when you get a chance. We'll fill out the paperwork for her."

My brother didn't always yell at me, but he also had to make sure that he wasn't playing favourites. So, when it was something that involved the apartment, he made sure that others heard him, just like he did with everyone else. He did always have a foul mouth, though. Nobody could break him of that habit, unfortunately. I nodded to him as I sipped my coffee, groaning hard as it traveled down my throat.

"I work a double shift today, but I have tomorrow off. I can bring him in tomorrow and we can fill out whatever you need."

He sighed softly as he closed the space between us and leaned in to kiss my cheek, something he had done for as long as I can remember. He sighed heavily when he pulled back, looking down at the dog.

"Look here, you little fucker. She's my sister, and I won't have you being a d**k about me showing her affection. She's all I have."

I didn't understand why he was talking to this dog like that, but I shrugged it off. Adonis was weird sometimes.
