The 127 seniors of the St. Ignatius Class of ‘36 squirmed and fidgeted in the mahogany pews in the front of their alma mater’s ornate, cruciform chapel. The chapel’s architecture created a bright and airy space, lit by a row of translucent, clerestory windows under the domed ceiling.
The largest windows in the church framed imported stained glass. Afternoon shafts of multicolored light illuminated the young men who had assembled to participate in this most important rite of passage.
