Chapter 6 11:55 AM July 21, 1936 Office of the Chairman and President Monarch Clothing and Apparel, Inc. Carlisle, Pennsylvania Nearly noon on a sweltering, midsummer day, the sun burned white-hot in a cloudless sky. Muggy, without a whisper of a breeze, the mid-day scorcher muted all progress in downtown Carlisle. At the Monarch business offices, the poor design of the stone structure failed to moderate the misery caused by the summer wave. To deal with the stifling heat, the Monarch clerks had opened the great windows in the offices, hoping that the banks of overhead fans might draw in and stir the soggy air to give them a bit of relief.
