The Unexpected Connection
The Unexpected Connection
Chapter One: The Girl Who Stole My Attention
On my first day at work, I was just a shy girl who knew nobody. I kept to myself, focused on my work, and avoided unnecessary conversations. I was in a new environment, surrounded by strangers, and all I wanted was to do my job and go home.
After a month of working at the company, things slowly began to change. I started getting along with my colleagues. We talked, laughed, and shared little moments that made the working environment feel more comfortable.
Then came Saturday.
I was busy talking and laughing with my colleagues when, out of nowhere, a beautiful coloured girl walked past my workstation. Something about her caught my attention. I continued working, but my eyes kept following her. I could not help it. There was something about her beauty that made me curious.
I began asking myself questions.
Should I talk to her? What would I say? What if she ignores me?
For someone as shy as I was, approaching her felt like a big challenge. I spent almost an hour gathering the courage to speak to her. Eventually, I called her over and asked her to come and work beside me at another workstation.
That simple moment became the beginning of something I never expected.
As we worked together, we started talking. Our conversation flowed naturally, and before I knew it, she asked me to accompany her to look for an apartment. Without hesitation, I agreed.
We walked together, talked, laughed, and enjoyed each other's company. From the outside, it might have looked like an ordinary day between two people getting to know each other. But inside me, something unusual was happening.
I was fighting with myself.
Was it wrong for me to think she was beautiful? Why couldn't I stop looking at her? Why was her smile already becoming something I wanted to see again and again?
I had gone to work expecting to spend only four hours there, as I usually did on Saturdays. Instead, I found myself going home after nine hours.
Nine hours!
I had lost track of time because of her. Her presence had taken me away from my usual routine, and I could not understand why one person I had only just met could have such an effect on me.
I tried to convince myself that it was nothing serious. Maybe I simply admired her beauty. Maybe I enjoyed her company. Perhaps I was just excited to have made a new friend.
But deep down, I knew there was something more.
Out of the blue, we exchanged phone numbers and became friends. I was happy that I had found someone I could talk to so easily, someone whose presence made an ordinary day feel special.
The following day, I visited her room. We sat together, laughed, and watched funny videos on my phone. I was wearing my earphones, enjoying the moment, when her phone suddenly rang.
At first, I paid little attention to the call. I continued watching my videos until I noticed that something was wrong.
She was crying.
Her tears caught me off guard. I wanted to know what had happened, what had hurt her so deeply. As I tried to understand the situation, I discovered that she was dating someone else.
My heart sank.
I sat there, watching someone I was beginning to care about cry over another person, and I felt a pain I could not explain. I wanted to comfort her, to make her smile again, but I also wished I could be the person who held a special place in her heart.
I could not tell her what I was feeling. How could I? We had only just become friends, and she had every right to love someone else.
So I swallowed my feelings and stayed beside her.
That was when my inner battle became more complicated.
At work, I found myself helping her with her tasks whenever I could. I enjoyed being around her, and every opportunity to talk to her felt precious. Unfortunately, we had met during the COVID-19 pandemic, when wearing masks was part of our daily lives.
Even with our masks on, we always found a reason to talk.
Sometimes, our conversations became so long that we were asked to step outside because we were distracting ourselves from work. Those moments made me happy, but they also made my feelings grow stronger.
Then came the little things.
She would sometimes struggle to afford food, and whenever I went to buy my own, I would buy something for her too. I did not do it because I expected anything in return. I simply cared about her and wanted to make sure she had something to eat.
She would hug me and sometimes kiss me. Her affection made everything confusing. Some of our colleagues even assumed that we were dating.
Whenever I heard them make those assumptions, I wondered whether they were seeing something that I was too afraid to acknowledge—or whether they were simply misunderstanding our friendship.
I wanted to ask her what we were to each other, but I was afraid of the answer.
Was I just a friend? Was I someone she trusted? Or was there a possibility that she felt something more?
I had no answers, only feelings that grew harder to control.
Then, one evening, something happened that brought all my confusion to the surface.
I was working late, trying to send my final sale before going home, when a woman with a beautiful figure approached me. She started talking to me while the coloured girl I had grown so attached to stood beside me.
The conversation seemed harmless at first. Then the woman tried to kiss me.
I immediately moved away.
I did not want the kiss, and I was not interested in encouraging her. But what surprised me most was the reaction of the girl standing next to me.
She was not pleased.
I could see that she was angry, although I could not understand why. I had not done anything wrong. I had moved away from the woman, yet somehow, I felt as though I had disappointed someone whose feelings I had no right to question.
That day, I did not receive my usual hug.
It might have seemed like a small thing to someone else, but to me, it meant something. I had become so accustomed to her affection that its absence left me feeling empty and confused.
I wanted to ask her what was wrong. I wanted to explain myself, even though I had nothing to explain. Most of all, I wanted to understand why she seemed jealous when she was the one who had a boyfriend.
But I said nothing.
I went home carrying questions that refused to leave my mind.
What are we?
Are we just friends, or are we something more?
Why does she get angry when another woman approaches me, yet she belongs to someone else?
Why does she hug and kiss me if she knows that I am beginning to develop feelings for her?
And perhaps the most painful question of all:
Am I falling in love with someone who may never love me the way I love her?
I had started working at that company as a shy girl who knew nobody. I never imagined that I would meet someone who could turn my ordinary days into something unforgettable, someone whose smile could make me happy and whose silence could hurt me.
I had come to work to earn a living, but somewhere along the way, I found myself fighting a battle I had never prepared for.
A battle between my heart and my mind.
My heart wanted to be close to her. My mind reminded me that she was already in a relationship. My heart held on to every hug, every kiss, and every smile. My mind questioned whether those moments meant anything at all.
I did not know what she wanted from me, and I was too afraid to ask.
All I knew was that I was no longer fighting to understand her alone.
I was fighting to understand myself.
