prologue.
People like to say life isn't fair. I learned that the hard way. My name is Royalty Wilson. I'm sixteen years old, and I was born and raised on the South Side of the Bronx—the kind of place where gunshots echo through the night, police sirens never really stop, and broken buildings line every block like forgotten memories. Home is a raggedy two-bedroom apartment that's falling apart piece by piece. The paint is peeling, the pipes barely work, and the smell of cigarettes and cheap alcohol never fully leaves the air. My mother and her boyfriend are both crackheads and alcoholics, too busy chasing their next high to care about anything else. My dad died when I was fourteen. And just like that, the little bit of normal I had left disappeared. But I didn't have time to fall apart. Because I had her. My daughter, Treasure. She's only one year old, but she's my entire world. From the moment she was born, it's been just me taking care of her—feeding her, bathing her, rocking her to sleep when the nights get too quiet and the apartment feels too empty. While other girls my age are worried about parties, boys, and what outfit they're wearing to school tomorrow, I'm worried about rent, diapers, and whether the lights will stay on another month. I'm a straight-A student at Evans High. I skipped my junior year and got pushed up to senior status. Not because I'm some genius trying to prove a point—but because the faster I graduate, the faster I can get my daughter out of this place. Out of this life. Since I'm the one paying most of the bills, I work a part-time job at McDonald's after school. I'm not your average teenager. My body isn't anything special. I don't have a car waiting for me in the parking lot after school. I don't wear the newest clothes or carry the latest phone everyone's obsessed with. And friends? I don't have those either. At school, people either bully me or act like I'm invisible. Most days I walk through those halls like a ghost no one notices. But honestly, I stopped caring a long time ago. Friends don't pay bills. Friends don't put food on the table. And friends definitely don't help me raise my daughter. The only thing that matters to me is graduating early, saving every dollar I can, and giving Treasure a life far away from the streets that raised me. I've spent my whole life fighting to survive. What I didn't know was that soon... my life was about to change in ways I never saw coming.
