Chapter 4 : LINES YOU SHOULD’NT CROSS

845 Words
By the third day, Elara stopped pretending St. Arden was just a school. It wasn’t. It was a system. And she had been placed at the bottom of it. She could feel it in the way people stepped around her in corridors. In the way conversations stopped when she passed. In the way her name had started to sound like something people used carefully, like it might stain them. But what bothered her most wasn’t the silence. It was the attention from one person she couldn’t understand. Adrian Vale. ⸻ He didn’t appear in her space often. Not directly. But she felt him everywhere now. Like a presence that didn’t need permission. And that made things worse. Because people noticed. Especially Liana Cross. ⸻ It happened near the lockers. Elara was late. Again. Her locker jammed slightly, forcing her to pull harder than usual. That’s when she felt it. Too quiet behind her. Too intentional. She turned— And stopped. Liana stood there. Not alone. Two students beside her. Both smiling like they already knew the outcome. Liana tilted her head. “We need to talk.” Elara shut her locker slowly. “I don’t think we do.” That made one of the girls laugh. Liana didn’t. She stepped closer instead. “You’re making things complicated,” she said. Elara frowned. “By existing?” A pause. Then Liana smiled. “No,” she said softly. “By thinking you matter here.” Silence spread between them. Elara didn’t move back. That was new. People usually expected her to. Liana noticed. Of course she did. Her smile faded slightly. “You’re not stupid,” Liana continued. “So I’ll make this simple.” She leaned in just enough for only Elara to hear. “Stay away from Adrian Vale.” Elara’s eyes narrowed. “Why?” Liana’s gaze flickered. Just for a second. But it was enough. Because it wasn’t confidence. It was fear. “You don’t want to be part of his problems,” Liana said carefully. Elara almost laughed. “I’m not part of anything.” Liana straightened. “Exactly,” she said. “So don’t start.” And then she walked away. Like the conversation was already decided. ⸻ But Elara wasn’t done thinking about it. Because nothing about that warning felt like arrogance. It felt like knowledge. Like Liana wasn’t guessing. She was warning. ⸻ Later that day, Elara found out why. Not from words. From action. ⸻ It was after classes. The school was quieter than usual. Elara was heading toward the library when she saw it. A group gathered near the courtyard. Too many students standing still for it to be normal. Curious, she slowed her steps. And then she saw Adrian. He was at the center. But not like before. Not untouchable. Not calm. Something was off. A teacher stood nearby, speaking sharply. Liana Cross was there too, arms crossed, face tight. And then Elara heard her name. “…the scholarship student,” the teacher said. “You were seen with her again.” Adrian didn’t react immediately. But something in his posture changed. Liana stepped forward. “Adrian, this is getting out of hand.” He finally looked at her. Cold. Not angry. Worse. Controlled. “And you think I care about your opinion?” he asked quietly. That made the crowd shift. Liana hesitated. “It’s not just my opinion. People are talking.” “People always talk,” he replied. Then he added: “Let them.” Silence tightened. Elara stood frozen at the edge of the crowd. Because she finally understood. This wasn’t about her being seen with him. It was about him breaking something he had never broken before. Distance. ⸻ The teacher stepped in. “Mr. Vale, this association is inappropriate—” Adrian turned slightly. “And what exactly is inappropriate?” he asked. His voice was calm. But it carried something sharp underneath. “She exists in your system,” he continued. “So does she need permission to be treated like a person?” The courtyard went still. Even Elara forgot to breathe. Liana’s voice softened, almost desperate. “This isn’t about that.” Adrian looked at her again. Longer this time. “It is now,” he said. ⸻ The silence that followed wasn’t ordinary. It was heavy. Final. Like something had been decided that couldn’t be reversed. Then Adrian turned. And for the first time— He saw Elara standing there. Their eyes met. And something passed between them. Something unspoken. Too direct. Too real. Elara felt it in her chest. A pull she didn’t understand. But before she could process it— Adrian looked away. Like he regretted it. And walked off. ⸻ That night, Elara couldn’t sleep. Not because of fear. But because of questions. Why did he defend her? Why did Liana warn her like that? And why did it feel like Adrian Vale was standing at the edge of something dangerous— Something he was trying very hard not to fall into?
