THE CONTRACT
**STEEL AND ASHES**
**Chapter 1: The Contract**
The church smelled like white roses and lies.
That’s the first thing I noticed.
Not the music. Not the 200 faces staring at me.
Just the roses. Too many of them. Too perfect.
Like someone paid a lot of money to cover up something rotten.
My name is Scarlett Monroe.
And today was supposed to be my wedding day.
I stood at the altar in a dress that cost more than my dad’s car.
Ten thousand dollars of silk and lace.
Veil pinned to hair I spent 3 hours curling.
Makeup that made me look like a doll.
Red lipstick. The kind that doesn’t come off when you cry.
Hands shaking.
But not from nerves.
From anger.
Because Lucas Bennett was 10 minutes late.
Lucas Bennett. My fiancé.
CEO of Bennett Holdings.
The man who asked me to marry him on a rooftop in New York.
The man who said "I’ll burn the world for you, Scar."
Where was he?
The doors at the back of the church creaked open.
Every head turned.
I held my breath.
It wasn’t him.
It was a man in a grey suit.
No smile. No flowers.
Just a black leather folder in his hands.
And eyes that looked through me, not at me.
My stomach dropped.
The music stopped.
The priest cleared his throat. "Is there a problem?"
The man walked down the aisle. Slow. Like he owned the place.
Like I was the problem.
He stopped in front of me.
Two feet away.
Close enough that I could smell his cologne. Expensive. Cold.
"Miss Monroe," he said.
His voice was quiet. But it cut through the silence like glass.
"Mr. Bennett won’t be coming."
A gasp.
From my sister Chloe, sitting in the front row.
From my aunt.
From someone I didn’t know.
The whole church went quiet.
200 people.
All watching me stand here like a fool in white.
I gripped the bouquet tighter. White lilies.
My knuckles went white too.
"What do you mean he’s not coming?" My voice came out small.
I hated that.
I cleared my throat. Tried again. Louder.
"What do you mean?"
The man opened the folder.
Inside, there were no vows.
No apology letter.
No explanation.
There was a contract.
Thick. 20 pages.
And on top of it...
Divorce papers.
Already signed.
Lucas Bennett’s signature. Big and sharp across the bottom.
The world tilted.
"Sign here," the man said. He held out a pen.
Gold. Heavy.
"For 2 million dollars.
Wire transfer will be sent within 24 hours.
You have 24 hours to leave the country.
If you don’t..." He paused.
"If you don’t, Mr. Drake will take everything you have left."
Vincent Drake.
I hadn’t heard that name in 3 years.
Not since the night my father’s company went bankrupt.
Not since the night my father put a gun in his mouth.
Vincent Drake.
The man who destroyed us.
The man Lucas worked for now.
The man who probably told Lucas to marry me in the first place.
My knees felt weak.
I wanted to sit down.
But I didn’t.
Because 200 people were watching.
And Scarlett Monroe does not fall in public.
"Two million," I repeated. My voice sounded far away.
"To disappear."
"Yes, Miss." The lawyer nodded. "It’s very generous."
Generous.
The word tasted like ash.
I looked down at the ring on my finger.
3 carats. Diamond.
Lucas put it there 6 months ago.
On his knees.
In the rain.
"Marry me," he’d said. "Please."
I remembered how warm his hands were.
How safe I felt.
And now this.
I looked up. Met the lawyer’s eyes.
"Where is he?" I asked.
"He’s in a meeting, Miss. Very important."
A meeting.
On his wedding day.
Right.
Chloe was crying now. I could hear her.
Someone whispered "This is humiliating."
The priest looked like he wanted to disappear.
The lawyer held the pen out again.
"Miss Monroe. Please. Sign.
It’s better this way. For everyone."
For everyone.
Except me.
I stared at the papers.
Legal words.
Waiver of rights.
Non-disclosure agreement.
"You may never speak of Mr. Bennett or Mr. Drake again."
They wanted to erase me.
They thought I would cry.
They thought I would take the money and run.
Back to my tiny apartment.
Back to nothing.
They thought I was the same scared 22 year old girl
who watched her father die.
They were wrong.
Something cold settled in my chest.
Something hard.
I reached out.
Took the pen.
The lawyer smiled. Just a little.
I didn’t sign my name on the dotted line.
I flipped the contract over.
To the blank back page.
And I wrote one word.
My name.
**Scarlett Monroe.**
Big.
Angry.
In black ink.
Then I dropped the pen.
It hit the marble floor with a sound like a gunshot.
"No," I said.
The lawyer blinked. "Excuse me?"
"I said no."
My voice didn’t shake this time.
It was clear. It was mine.
"I’m not signing your blood money.
I’m not disappearing.
And I’m not afraid of Vincent Drake."
The church was so quiet I could hear the air conditioning.
The lawyer’s smile was gone.
"Miss, I strongly advise—"
"You advise your boss," I cut him off.
I pulled the veil off my head.
Tossed it on the floor.
The lilies too.
"Tell Lucas Bennett he missed his wedding.
Tell Vincent Drake I’m not running."
I stepped down from the altar.
Bare feet now. My heels were too loud.
I walked past the lawyer.
Past the rows of people.
Past Chloe, who was staring at me with her mouth open.
Halfway down the aisle I stopped.
Turned back.
"And tell them both something else for me."
The lawyer waited.
I smiled.
For the first time that day.
It wasn’t nice.
"Scarlett Monroe doesn’t break.
She burns."
I walked out.
The doors closed behind me with a soft click.
And I left 200 people, a 10,000 dollar dress,
and a contract in ashes behind me.
Outside, it was raining.
New York in October. Cold.
I had 24 hours.
No money.
No family except Chloe.
And two of the most powerful men in the country who wanted me gone.
Good.
Let them come.
Because the girl they tried to bury
was done being quiet.
The girl they tried to buy
was done being sold.
My father was dead.
My company was gone.
My wedding was a lie.
But I was still breathing.
And as long as I was breathing,
I was going to fight.
Steel and ashes.
That’s what was left of me.
Time to see which one was stronger.
