CHAPTER SIXTEEN Riley lifted me higher and higher above her head. I waved my arms and legs about, but it was useless because I couldn’t hit Riley. I felt her strong grip tighten on my clothes and realized, belatedly, that she was either going to break my back or slam me on the floor, which would definitely break my back if she threw me down hard enough. I didn’t even have time to cast a spell. As it turned out, however, I didn’t need to, because a blast of magical energy came out of nowhere and struck Riley in the chest.
