Forty-five minutes had now passed and Kellor was growing impatient. He had been watching John almost non-stop for the last fifteen minutes, waiting for some indication that Raymond was in touch with him. John, for his part, was curled up underneath a tree and trying to rest. He had heard a few stray thoughts, but nothing that had been directed at him personally. As he lay there, John could feel Kellor’s gaze scrutinize him and every so often he opened his eyes and shook his head, just to confirm that he had received no contact from the Sergeant. The remnants of the MkII unit that had stayed behind at the rear observation point were busy, eating, sleeping or playing a mental game of cards. The object of the game was to read the other player’s mind and see what cards he was holding mentally.
