“This is my friend, Frank. Frank, my daughter Lucy,” Mum attempts the introduction. I don’t move from the doorway. Frank looks me up and down briefly before returning his attention to Mum. He places his hand on her leg, but she covers it, stopping it moving higher. “Hello, Lucy,” he says, his eyes on Mum. “I’ve got homework to do.” I don’t wait for either of them to respond.
