The Contract

547 Words
The motel room smelled like bleach. Elena sat on the edge of a bed with a comforter the color of old mustard, the contract spread across her knees. She had expected legalese. Twenty pages of tiny font designed to hide the hook. Instead, Adrian's handwriting was everywhere. She read each clause with a sickness growing in her stomach. One year. Measured to the day. Public devotion. They would attend functions together, Hold hands and Smile. Separate bedrooms. Her own wing of the estate. Locks on both sides. Relief washed through her, because some part of her, had wondered if Adrian expected payment in skin. No expectation of children. A single line, underlined twice. No financial dependence. She would have her own accounts, her own access, her own name on documents that could not be touched by him or her father. Either party may request divorce after one year. He was giving her an exit he could not legally block. Neither party shall publicly embarrass the other. A warning disguised as mutual respect. And then she found it. Clause 14: The party of the second part (Elena Vale) agrees never to investigate, discuss, or inquire about Marcus Blackwood, living or deceased, with any person including the party of the first part. Elena's blood slowed in her veins. Marcus Blackwood. She read it three times and There, in the termination section, she found another clause Should the party of the second part violate Clause 14, this agreement shall be immediately void. All financial protections, property rights, and confidentiality guarantees shall be revoked. The party of the second part shall forfeit all claims and protections established herein. Elena grabbed her purse. She left the key on the dresser and drove back through the city, back to the gates that had closed behind her only hours before. The guards let her through without a word. Adrian was in the library waiting. He stood by the window in the same black suit, as if he had not moved since she left as if he had known she would return. "Who is Marcus Blackwood?" she asked. His shoulders tightened. The glass in his hand froze halfway to his lips. "Someone you don't need to know." "Don't lie to me." Her voice shook. "You built a wall around his name. You made my safety conditional on my silence about him. So either you tell me who he is, or you admit that this whole contract is about hiding him." Adrian set down the glass. "He is none of your concern." "Was he your brother?" Silence. "Is he dead?" "Elena." Her name came out like a warning. "Sign the contract or don't but do not ask me about Marcus again." She felt her heart turn colder. If he wanted a silent wife, he would get one but she would not be silent because he demanded it. She would be silent because she chose to be. Elena walked to the desk. She picked up the pen he had left there and She signed her name. She held it out to him. Adrian took the contract. He looked at her signature. At the way the letters leaned, at the middle initial she had included....C for Catherine. His eyes narrowed. "Welcome to the family, Mrs. Blackwood," he said.
