Chapter One: The wedding Betrayal
Elena stared at the reflection in the mirror. For twenty three years, she had been the ghost in the Vale family photograph But today, in this dress, with the garden ceremony waiting and the string quartet tuning its instruments somewhere below, she had allowed herself to believe that love had finally made her visible. Nathan had chosen her. She pressed a palm against her stomach, trying to calm the butterflies. They felt more like birds today. Wild, frantic and alive. "Miss Vale?" The wedding planner's voice crackled through the intercom by the door, sharp and efficient. "We're running behind. Mr. Cross hasn't come down from the east wing yet. Have you seen him?" Elena's smile faltered. "Not since breakfast." "He's not answering his phone. His mother is asking for him." A thin thread of unease wound itself around her throat. Nathan had been restless that morning, his kisses distracted, his eyes drifting toward windows. She had told herself it was nerves but the unease tightened anyway, because Nathan had never been the kind of man to disappear. "I'll find him," she said. The planner protested, something about the dress and the schedule and the two hundred guests already seated in white folding chairs, but Elena was already moving. She couldn't sit still in this room, she needed to see him. She moved through the east wing of the Vale estate, the heavy skirt gathered in both hands. Then she heard it. A low laugh, breathless, unmistakably Vivian'sfloating from behind the door of the The guest suite. The one with the heavy curtains and the bed that had been made up that morning for Nathan to dress in. Elena's hand found the doorknob. Her fingers were cold. Her heart was beating in a place too high in her chest as She pushed the door open. Nathan was on the bed. His shirt was unbuttoned, his hair mussed in a way Elena had once found endearing. Vivian straddled him, her champagne colored hair cascading over bare shoulders, her laughter dying as her head turned toward the door. Her lips were swollen. Her eyes were bright. She did not look surprised. She looked... victorious. For a moment, Elena couldn't breathe. Her body forgot how. The air in the room had turned to glass, and she was inhaling shards. "Elena." Nathan's voice. He pushed Vivian off him not with the violence of a man caught, but with the irritation of someone interrupted. "Close the door." She didn't move..... She couldn't. Her feet had rooted into the floorboards. "How long?" The voice that came out of her didn't sound like hers. It was too small....Too broken. Nathan stood. He buttoned his shirt with steady fingers "Elena, don't make this dramatic." "How long?" Vivian stretched like a cat, unbothered by her nakedness,"Oh, Ellie. Don't look like that. You didn't really think....." She laughed, a silvery sound. "You didn't really think he wanted you, did you?" The words landed precisely. Vivian had always known where to strike. Twenty years of practice. "Two years," Nathan said. He ran a hand through his hair, avoiding her eyes. "Maybe longer. It just... happened. Vivian and I have always had a connection you wouldn't understand." Elena felt the sentence physically. Two years, while she had been planning their future, While she had been sketching their apartment in her journals and saving recipes he liked. Two years of Vivian's perfume on his collar, of his late nights at the office, of the distance she had blamed on stress and wedding planning. All of it. All of it had been a lie. The cruelty was so casual, so final, that her knees buckled. She caught herself on the doorframe. She saw Vivian smirking behind Nathan's shoulder, saw the way her stepsister's hand rested possessively on his back. "Fix your face," Nathan said. "People are waiting. We'll figure out how to handle the announcement." Handle the announcement...Not I'm sorry..... Not I never meant to hurt you. Elena turned. She didn't run but she moved, one hand trailing along the wall for balance. The hallway stretched endlessly. She made it to the top of the grand staircase before her father found her. Richard Vale looked every inch the patriarch...silver hair, crisp suit, the kind of face that commanded boardrooms and dinner parties. He took in her disheveled state, her tear streaked face, and his expression did not soften. "Elena." His voice was a blade. "What are you doing?" She opened her mouth, but the sob that came out was ugly, wrenching. "Nathan... he's with Vivian. He's been... they've been..." "Stop." She blinked at him, tears blurring his face. "Pull yourself together." Richard stepped closer, his cologne overwhelming, his eyes scanning the lower floor as if checking for witnesses. "There are two hundred guests downstairs. The Cross family is here. The governor is here. You will not embarrass this family with hysterics." Elena stared at him. The sob died in her throat, choking her. "Dad... he..." "I know what Nathan did" Richard said, his voice dropping to a furious whisper. "I know what Vivian did but there are larger things at stake than your feelings, Elena. You will go downstairs, you will smile, and you will figure out how to salvage this situation. Do you understand me?" She looked at her father...the man who had never tucked her in, never remembered her birthday without a secretary's reminder and felt something inside her go very, very still. The grief didn't leave. It simply...turned to stone. "I can't," she whispered. "You will." Richard's hand closed around her upper arm, hard enough to bruise. "Or so help me, Elena..." "Or what?" The voice came from below. Deep and Unhurried. Cutting through the tension like a knife through silk. Elena turned. A man stood in the foyer, framed by the arched doorway that led to the garden. He was tall, broad..shouldered, dressed in black that seemed to absorb the light around him. His hair was dark, his jaw sharp, his presence so commanding, He looked up at her with eyes the color of winter frost, and in them she saw no pity, Only a cold, assessing calm that made the hair on her arms stand up. She didn't know him. She had never seen him before but something in the way her father's face went pale, told her that the man below was not a guest. "Blackwood," Richard breathed. "What are you doing here?" The man..Blackwood didn't answer him. He kept his gaze locked on Elena, climbing the stairs with a predator's unhurried grace. Each step echoed in the sudden silence. He stopped three steps below her. Close enough that she could see the flecks of silver in his eyes, the faint scar tracing his jawline, the way his mouth curved into something that was not quite a smile. "If the groom doesn't want her," Adrian Blackwood said, his voice smooth and utterly certain, "I'll marry her." Elena's heart stopped.
