Guilt

The Vale mansion looked smaller than Elena remembered. She stood at the front door. This had been her prison for twenty-three years. She had thought returning would feel like coming home. It felt like walking back into a trap. The butler opened the door. His face betrayed nothing, but his eyes slid away from hers too quickly. They already knew.....Of course they knew. The city had seen her on the courthouse steps. Elena Blackwood. The name had traveled faster than she had. "Is my father here?" "His study, Mrs...." The butler caught himself, a flush creeping up his neck. "Miss Elena." She didn't correct him. She walked past him, her heels clicking on marble that had once made her feel small. Richard's study door was closed. She didn't knock. He was standing by the window, phone in hand, mid conversation. When he saw her, his face went through a series of transformations..shock, anger, before settling into the mask she knew best. Disappointment. "Elena." He ended the call without saying goodbye. "Have you lost your mind? Do you know what you've done? The headlines..." "I need you to tell me about Marcus Blackwood." Richard went still. Completely, utterly still. His hand tightened on the phone until his knuckles turned white. "Where did you hear that name?" "Adrian." Richard's mouth flattened into a line so thin it disappeared. He set the phone down with deliberate care, but his fingers were trembling. She saw it. She had never seen her father's hands shake. "Get out," he said. "No." "Elena, I am not asking." "And I'm not leaving." She stepped closer. "Who was Marcus? What happened seven years ago? Why does Adrian believe he was murdered?" "Murdered? " Richard's voice cracked on the word. "He told you that? He told you Marcus was...." He stopped. He turned away from her, his shoulders rigid, his breathing audible in the sudden silence. "That bastard..that absolute bastard." Elena watched his back. She watched the way his hands found the edge of his desk and gripped it, the way his head bowed as if under a weight she couldn't see. "He was...." she said. "Adrian's brother. He died seven years ago and you know why." Richard spun around. The fury in his face was unlike anything she had ever seen. . "You listen to me," he said, his voice low and shaking. "You stay away from that family. You stay away from Adrian, Do you understand me?" "He's my husband." "He's a viper! " The shout echoed off the walls. Richard's face was red, veins standing out at his temples. "He married you to get to me. To get to this family. And you walked into it like a lamb because you're too stupid, too desperate, too...." "Why are you afraid of him?" The question stopped him mid breath. Richard's mouth hung open. "I am not afraid," he said. but his voice had shrunk. It sounded like a lie even to him. Elena felt the shift in her chest. Her father....Richard Vale, the man who had faced down boardrooms and governors and never flinched was afraid of Adrian Blackwood. The realization didn't bring satisfaction. It brought a cold, creeping dread. "You know why he married me," she said quietly. "You knew before I did." Richard's eyes darted away. "He didn't want a wife," her father said, and the words came out. "He wanted a key and you, Elena...you've always been so eager to be used." The sentence landed like a physical blow but Elena didn't flinch. She had already absorbed the worst Nathan could offer. Her father's contempt was old armor. She wore its bruises like a second skin. "What did you do?" she asked. "Seven years ago. What did you do to Marcus?" Richard's face closed like a fist. "Get out of my house." "Not until you..." "Get out! " The rage in his voice propelled her backward, toward the door. She reached for the handle, her fingers numb, her mind screaming. At the edge, she stopped. Richard had turned back to the window. "He's going to destroy us," her father whispered. It wasn't a warning to her. It was a confession to himself. "He married you to watch us burn and when he's done... when he's done, Elena, there won't be anything left of you to bury." Elena walked out. The marble hallway stretched before her, and she moved through it without seeing, without feeling, her father's voice looping in her head like a siren. He married you to watch us burn. She left with a single, suffocating certainty: Her father was guilty of something. And Adrian had married her to make him pay.
