Selene’s heart dropped straight into her stomach.
“Kira,” she whispered under her breath.
But Kira didn’t move. Her grip on her elder sister tightened. God, if she had been more careful with her drink, Selene wouldn't be in this mess!
Xenia approached them, one hand holding on to the shawl dropped across her shoulders.
Selene swallowed, her pulse thundering in her ears.
“Grandma, I…”
Xenia's palm collided with Selen's face in seconds, the sound echoing sharply through the hallway. Selene’s head snapped to the side, pain blooming across her cheek.
“Selene!” Kira gasped, stepping forward immediately. Her eyes darted to Xenia in rage.
“Aren't you being a little too much?!” She snapped.
“Mind your damned tongue child!” Xenia warned.
Kira glared at her, biting down her lip as tears formed in her eyes. Xenia had always treated her less than, always belittled her and had always reminded her that she looked exactly like her son who refused to be under her control.
Selene slowly turned her head back, her cheek burning, her eyes stinging. Xenia returned her gaze to Selene.
“You have embarrassed this family,” she said.
Selene’s fingers curled at her sides.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen,” she said, her voice quieter. “I don’t even remember most of last night. I was…”
“I do not want to listen to your excuses.”
Selene fell silent. Kira stepped forward again, unable to hold back.
“She didn’t do anything wrong!” Kira insisted. “It was an accident! She took my drink and…”
Kira froze mid sentence and swallowed. If she goes any further, she'd be forced to explain herself in more detail.
“It doesn't matter..” Kira said, "It was an accident, okay?”
“The man she shamelessly opened her legs to is your fiancée, you fool!” Xenia snapped.
“The one you forced on me to repay your debt?!” Kira yelled right back.
“Kira.” Selene cautioned.
“God, you're so selfish and evil!” Kira snapped in irritation.
“You had no complaints about me when you were living off my name.”
Xenia exhaled and turned to Selene.
“The world thinks you and the Don are involved with each other and they think you're a shameless hag who stole her sister's fiancé."
“You..”
Selene pulled her sister back before she could say anything else.
“Grannie, this is all a…a huge misunderstanding. I didn't know that was…”
“You will marry him.”
The words hit like a physical blow.
Selene blinked. “…What?”
Kira’s head snapped towards Xenia. “You're joking.”
“The Wynne name will not be dragged into the mud like this,” Xenia continued, “If the world believes you have attached yourself to that man…”
Her gaze hardened.
“Then you will make it legitimate.”
Selene’s heart pounded violently. She must have heard the old lady wrong! There's no way she's suggesting she marries her sister's fiancée. Bloody hell, so much was happening right now that she could hardly even keep up!
“You are out of your f*****g mind!” Kira snapped. “You created a debt and we have to pay for it?!”
Xenia glanced at the guard by the door. “Take her away..”
The man approached and yanked Kira off her feet as she screamed and kicked.
“What the hell are you doing?! Put me down!” Kira screamed. The men carried her away from the living area, far from sight.
Selene glanced from Xenia to Kira. “Grandma, she's…”
“You will marry The Don in her place.” Xenia said again. “Today.”
Selene stood there, rooted to the ground in horror. Was there any one in the entire city who hasn't heard of the Mafia Don of the East Coast? That man is rumoured to kill without a second thought! Hell, she had been contemplating the idea of her sister even marrying that guy!
Selene shook her head, "This…there has to be another way. This is insane!” she said, taking a small step back. “You can’t just…”
“I can,” Xenia cut in. “Since there was no official announcement stating that he's engaged to…her…we can claim it was you all along.”
Selene stared at Xenia in horror, this woman was willing to go through extreme lengths to get her way.
“No.” Selene said. “I will not marry him! And neither will my sister! We can repay the money we owe him, you know that!”
Xenia chuckled. “Not without the company crumbling down to pieces. Repaying that man is the same as taking out the foundation that Wynne group is standing on.”
Selene shook head, "You can't make a huge decision like this for me.”
“I run this household!” Xenia snapped. “I have run the Wynne family for years and my decision stands!” Her eyes glared back at Selene.
“I already told the Don about this new arrangement. If you know what's best for you, you will marry him.”
Selene shook her head, “No. I've had enough. Kira and I are leaving..”
“Leaving?!” Xenia said, "You think I'm your problem? You wait till the Don finds you himself! Trust me, I will make sure he finds you both!”
Selene stood rooted to the ground. She had always known Xenia only cared about using the people around her but seeing it being directed towards her like this was…brutal.
“How could you say something like that?!” Selene asked, “We're your granddaughters!”
“Children from a bastard son who married your w***e of a mother! You lost them in an accident and walked into my home with your own two feet and I raised you both myself!”
Xenia pointed her ringed finger in Selene's place. “You or your sister will marry that man and repay my debts! Got it?!”
Selene clenched her fist, tears pooling in her eyes. She'd done everything to satisfy this woman but this woman would rather send them off to their death bed than save them..
Selene and Kira had tried to run away in the past and that had failed miserably. Xenia had her hands and feet in every part of the country. Getting a job or even trying to live life outside of the Wynne group would be difficult.
Hell, imagine if the leader of the most dangerous Mafia comes after them both. People would get hurt and Selene didn't want to risk that.
Xenia straightened, seeing her threats had worked tremendously.
“His car is waiting right outside for you.” Xenia announced with disinterest.
Selene glanced at the door and back at Xenia. Her sister didn't have to marry that guy.
“Open this damned door!” Kira screamed from upstairs, banging hard and furiously on the door.
“You won't force her into anything she doesn't want to do.” Selene said, facing Xenia.
“Sign the agreement with the Don, then we can discuss terms.”
“If you don't keep your word..." Selene warned, "I'll have you remember I do not have anything else to lose.”
Silence enveloped the space as Xenia exhaled. “Fine.”
Selene exhaled and nodded. She turned and made her way towards the door. She made her way down the hallway where she could still hear Kira kicking and screaming for the door to be opened.
She stepped out of the house, holding back her tears as a black SUV pulled over just outside the mansion.
“Selene. Selene!” Kira screamed. “Open this damned door!”
She bit back tears, taking one step after the other towards the card before settling in the passenger's seat.
“Ready to go, Miss?” The driver asked.
Selene shuts her eyes.
She was really doing this, getting married to a stranger, a man she had already given herself to without knowing who he was.
And now, she was being sent back to him.
“Yes,” she said quietly.
