Chapter 3: Blood ties and betrayal

Elara's pov My hands had been trembling ever since I unlocked Daniel’s phone last night. Every message and every picture felt like a punch to my chest. I kept telling myself there must be a reason for all this. Maybe it was not what it seemed. Then I saw the name Juliet on the screen. It was like a joke. “Who the hell is Juliet?” The words slipped out before I could stop them. For a moment the room went completely still. Daniel froze. It was only for a second, but I saw it clearly; the slight stiffening of his shoulders, the way his eyes flickered before he quickly turned away. He hadn’t expected me to know. He walked past me toward the kitchen like the question didn’t exist, like I was just background noise in his life. My chest felt tight. Hurt. For months Daniel would come back late at night, he would take phone calls outside, he would hide his messages when I walked into the room and every time I asked what's going on he would say the same thing. Work You’re overthinking. Trust me, and I did. God, I trusted him. “Hey.” I screamed, My voice was sharper now. “I’m talking to you. Who is Juliet?” He sighed heavily, like I was exhausting him. “Elara,” he said, rubbing his temples. “Don’t you think it’s a little too early for this? I don’t have time for your games today.” For a moment I just stared at him. “Games?” I repeated slowly, “You call this a game?” My hands were shaking now, not from anger, but from fear, and a small part of me already knew the truth, but hearing it out loud would destroy everything. I forced myself to move and I passed my phone across the table toward him. Screenshots filled the screen, messages, photos, late-night conversations that clearly weren’t about work. Promises, Plans. And Even more heart breaking, a wedding date. The moment his eyes landed on the screen, the color drained from his face. “H..how did you get this?” he asked, His voice sounded weak now. I laughed, but it wasn’t a happy laugh. It was the kind that comes when your heart is breaking and you don’t know what else to do. “Does this look like a game to you?” I demanded. My voice cracked. “You’re getting married and I…” The rest of the sentence shattered in my throat as tears slid down my cheeks before I could stop them. Daniel stared at me emotionless For a moment I waited. I waited for him to say it was a mistake, waited for him to say the messages meant nothing, waited for him to say he loved me. Instead he asked, “Did you go through my phone?” Something inside me broke. That was it? That was the only thing he cared about? Not the lies, not the betrayal, just the fact that I found out and I went through his phone? A strange heat rushed through my body. “Ahhh, you traitor!” I screamed. Before I realized what I was doing, my fists were hitting his chest. Again, and again, though Each strike hurt my hands, but I didn’t stop. Two years. Two years of loving him, Two years of believing we were building a future together. Every punch carried a piece of that pain. “Why would you do this to me?” I cried out My palms burned, my chest ached. It felt like my heart was being torn apart inside my ribs. “Hey…hey!” he snapped, grabbing my wrists. But I struggled against him, tears blurring my vision. “I trusted you!” I sobbed, “I loved you and gave you my all, and this is how you choose to pay me back” Then suddenly “Enough!” he screamed, His voice thundered through the room. Everything stopped. His grip tightened as he looked down at me with cold eyes. “We’re done.” The words slammed into my chest. Done? Just like that? Hell no… My ears began ringing. “No… you can’t do this to me.” The room felt heavy, Like I was standing outside my own body watching everything happen. My mind replayed every memory we shared, the first time he held my hand, every night he told me he loved me, the promises he made about our future together. The apartment we talked about buying and The life we planned. Standing there, barely able to breathe, one question haunted me. Was any of it real? “I’m sorry,” he muttered. But the apology sounded empty, Cold. “No… no…” I cried, “We can fix this. Nothing is wrong with us. We’re fine. Please… we don’t have to do this.” Before I knew it, my knees hit the floor, begging him at his feet. Humiliation burned through my entire body. I hated myself for begging, I had done nothing wrong, He was the one who cheated. The one who lied. Yet somehow I was the one on my knees…begging. Because I loved him and I had built my entire world around him. Daniel grabbed my shoulders and forced me back to my feet. “You need to leave,” he said calmly, “Find someone else, it's over” His next words destroyed whatever was left of me. “I’ve been with her for months and honestly, she might just be the one.” My stomach dropped. “So… what happens to me now?” I asked quietly, sobbing heavily. He didn’t answer right away. He just simply walked toward the door and opened it. “I guess you’ll have to figure that out yourself.” “Please,” I begged, My voice sounded small, broken. “Please don’t do this.” “Please,” he said coldly, “Get out.” For a moment I couldn’t move, this couldn’t be real. Two years of my life couldn’t end like this. Then suddenly he grabbed my arm, I tried to pull away, but my body felt weak. He dragged me toward the door and shoved me outside. “It’s better this way.” he said before he door slammed shut. The sound echoed through the hallway. And just like that…Everything was over. I stood there staring at the door, waiting for it to open again, waiting for him to come back and say he made a mistake, hoping that this is just a bad dream. But the door never moved. Eventually I stumbled outside and called a cab. The entire ride home passed in silence while tears rolled down my face. When I finally reached my apartment, I climbed the stairs slowly, each step felt heavier than the last. When I pushed open the door, my body fell apart. Liora lay weakly on the bed, her skin was pale, her breathing slow. Congenital heart disease. She had been fighting it for some time now, seeing her like that made my chest ache even more. She didn't deserve it. How cruel could life be? Two years of lies. Two years of fake love. Two years of promises that meant nothing. I collapsed beside her bed and began sobbing uncontrollably. “What’s wrong?” Liora asked softly. Her voice was weak, but her eyes were full of concern. I quickly wiped my tears. “It’s nothing,” I said, forcing a smile, “I just got onion juice in my eyes… you know how strong it can be.” She gave me a knowing look, “We both know that’s a lie.” The tears returned instantly. “I didn’t know heartbreak could hurt like this,” I whispered. Her gaze shifted toward the picture hanging on the wall. “Is it him?” My gaze hardened. “Yes.” I swallowed hard, “He… he broke up with me.” She sighed and gently rubbed my back. “i’m sorry, It’s going to be okay.” But when I looked at the photos on the wall, something inside me snapped. Pictures of Daniel and me, smiling and happy. Lies. I tore them down violently and ripped them into pieces. “You liar,” I cried. “You traitor.” The pieces fell to the floor like the remains of a life that never really existed, and once again I broke down, sobbing into my hands. The room was silent except for my cries. Two years of love had disappeared in a single night. And now, I had to start over. Alone. I wiped the tears from my face and looked at the torn pictures on the floor. Two years of my life had just ended. But Liora was still here. Someone had to stay strong for her. I didn’t know how I would survive this. I didn’t know what tomorrow would bring. But one thing was certain. My life would never be the same again.
