Morals

Clara sat in her room with Luna's report in her hand. She twirled in her chair lamentingly. A knock at her door broke Clara away from her train of thoughts. Before she could answer, Lincoln burst into her room with a visible panic on his face. "Clara, Luna is in trouble." Clara's head was surrounded by horror. She tossed the papers on the table and walked out hurriedly. Lincoln followed her, trying to keep up with the pace. "What happened exactly?" "She's unconscious. Possibly in a coma." Clara moved her legs even faster. Both the doctors marched into Luna's room to find her lying unconscious on her bed with a nurse by her side taking her pulse seriously. "What is the status of the patient?" "The pulse is dangerously low. Probably too much belsomra." "How did she even get her hands on it? I am very disappointed in the staff. Your job is to make sure the patient does not a***e the medication. What is this?" "Sorry doctor" "now hurry and shift her to the ER ward immediately. What were you waiting for??". The nurse nodded. Lincoln gestured to the nurse to help her pick up Luna, but instead, Lincoln picked up Luna in his arms and the three of them rushed to the ER. They finally reach the ER and the doctors start their treatment on Luna right away. Clara and Lincoln wait outside the room. After sometime, Lincoln broke the silence, "Clara, I suggest you hand me over the case of Luna." "I got it under control. I don't need your help." "Yeah, I can look at the 'control' you have" He retorted at Clara by making quotation marks with his fingers. She glared at him. "Then tell me what you and Luna talked about four days ago before you went for lunch with me." "Lincoln, I can do it." Lincoln grabbed Clara by her shoulders and turned her to face him. " Look at me in the eyes and say that you didn't expect this to happen." Clara had shut her eyes tight as Lincoln barked at her. "Hah. I knew you were hiding something." He loosened his grip on Clara. Lincoln walked a few feet away from Clara, pulling out his phone from his coat pocket. "Luna threatened me to call her parents and tell them to take her away because she was alright now." Lincoln put his phone down and turned in the direction of Clara. "She said she would kill herself if I didn't. " Lincoln walked slowly towards her with disbelief on his face. "You know we have a code in our hospital for cases like this. Where a patient threatens to commit suicide." Clara's head hung low. "What were you thinking, Clara? You weren't like that. The Clara I knew was the best at her work. Very professional. Very intelligent. " They both sat down on the waiting bench outside the ER. Not speaking a word. An hour later, the doctor came out of the ER. "Who's patient was this?" Clara raised herself up nervously and walked towards the doctor. "I-I am in charge of her..." "Such a high dose of belsomra in her prescription. For such a young lady? May I know the reason?" "Well she- " "I'm sorry Dr. Clara, but this is a warning. You will have your medical license suspended if such a thing is repeated ever again. For sure." The doctor screamed at Clara. The entire room stared at her. "Yes sir," Clara replied in a low, embarrassed tone. The doctor stomped out of the scene. Lincoln waited for Clara to get back to him. He had a disappointed look on his face. Clara walked back to Lincoln. He nodded in disapproval and started going back to his room. Clara stopped Lincoln by his sleeve. "Wait Lincoln." He stopped. "Take over the case of Luna." Clara fisted her hand inside her coat pocket. "I have failed. And I'm not a suitable therapist for her." Lincoln heard her carefully. "I think this is the only right thing to do. I'll call her parents and let them know about the change in her therapist. " The expression on Lincoln's face softened. He placed his right hand on Clara's left shoulder. "That's the right thing to do." Clara's eyes teared up and she began walking away. "Wait Clara. I need you to tell me all the talk that happened between you and Luna four days ago, in detail." Clara paused for a while. " OK." She agreed with the least will. She sighed loudly. That day- Clara cautiously stepped into Luna's room and cleared her throat. " Ahem. Anything you want?" "Can you please shut the door?" Clara hesitantly closed the door but stayed close to it, in case she needed to flee. "Yeah? What is it?" "I am so sorry Clara... You were right, I wasn't in my right head. I feel so guilty for charging up on you like that." Clara was taken by surprise. The words coming out of Luna's mouth were completely unexpected. She was too stunned to speak. "Will you please forgive me?" Luna's voice wavered. "Yeah, it's alright. We all make mistakes. The important part is to realize them and learn from them." Silence fell, making Clara awkward. With her words resonating in her ears. "You are quite right about that though, Clara." Luna turned back with a half smile on her face. Her words caught Clara off guard. "Huh?...what?" "Oops, I meant, DOCTOR Clara." Clara's eyebrows crossed. "As I have learned from my mistake, you should learn from yours too." Clara was puzzled. She wasn't able to comprehend Luna's words. "Can you please tell me what you mean, more clearly maybe?" Clara tried her best to not sound irritated. "Tsk. Shame. A psychologist, losing her temper over what a patient says. Very unprofessional. " Luna got up suddenly, which startled Clara. She grabbed the handle of the door in a panic. As if her reflexes knew what could be coming next. But Luna simply turned her chair to face Clara. When she saw the horrified expression on Clara's face, she chuckled. A tear rolled down Luna's eyes from laughing too much. Clara took a brief moment to process what had just happened. She was embarrassed. Her face was flustered red. "Don't worry doc. I won't kill you. That has no interest in me getting away from here." "You think you could harm me? Oh please. Find better jokes to entertain my staff." The expression on Luna's face was erased. " Not you. Your profession. I am so tempted to ruin your so-called reputed service." "You can't. It's futile to even try." Snapped Clara at Luna. "I can." Luna snapped back at Clara. "How?" "By killing myself." Luna's words echoed in the room. Without giving it a second thought, Clara aggressively replied "that doesn't bother me. You can do whatever you feel is right." Her words wounded Luna. But she didn't show a sign of her weakened spirit. Clara was about to make her exit when Luna spoke "Not so fast Clara. Your staff visit me more often than you do. I can hand them my suicide note and you can't do anything about it. And if my parents find out about me dying, then good luck getting a promotion." Clara knew the rooms were checked every day by the staff for any hazardous object. So it was impossible for Luna to pull any stunt. She smirked at Luna and unlocked the door. "Four days, Clara. After that, you'll be kissing your license goodbye. Get me out of here while you can." "Try me." Luna called behind Clara, but she simply walked away. Tears were flooding down Luna's eyes the moment Clara left her room. "Your biggest mistake was taking my case, Clara." Luna said out loud, alone in the room.
