I barely slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Daniel.
Not the Daniel I thought I knew.
Not the man who had held me at night and whispered that he loved me. Not the man I had been stupid enough to believe I would spend the rest of my life with.
I saw the real Daniel.
The man who had slept with my stepsister behind my back.
The man who had planned to marry me while helping my family take control of everything that belonged to me.
I should have been heartbroken.
Maybe part of me still was.
But this morning, anger was stronger.
I stared at my reflection in the mirror as I fastened the final button on my white blouse.
I looked different.
Maybe I wasn’t.
Maybe it was simply the fact that, for the first time in my life, I wasn’t looking at myself through their eyes.
