Chapter 10 - Kate Burton

1121 Words
After some tiring days—her wedding and her best friend's—finally, she was back to her monotonous routine. She had to return to work, and it was her first-day meeting Kate Burton, the celebrity she was going to work for. Of course, she was not alone. There were two others with her to be her assistants. And the meeting, besides introductions, would also discuss the job desk of each assistant. "Anna will be the manager taking care of the work and contracts with partners." Jenny, the CEO, began handing out assistant duties after introductions and pleasantries. "While others will help with other tasks," she continued. She made that decision because Anna was more experienced than the others. Kate glanced at the three assistants, Anna, Helen, and Ben, then turned back to Jenny. "Are you sure they deserve the job?" She sounded doubtful and belittled the three of them. "Sure, they're very experienced with this," Jenny replied with a big smile, trying to show her friendliness. After all, Kate was her client. So, she had to show her best, especially at the first meeting. "How could I place an inexperienced assistant for an actress like you?" And pleased the client. Kate smiled with satisfaction at hearing that, especially in the last sentence. "You can call them anytime. But, please, be considerate before doing so. They need to rest and take care of their lives, too." She carefully said that. Although Jenny took excellent care of her talent satisfaction, she also must take care of her employees. She sometimes saw celebrities outrageously treat their assistants. They were forced to work outside of work. Yeah, it might have something to do with keeping their mood up. But that was not true. She wanted the professionalism of both parties. "Don't worry. I won't do that. I'm a professional actress." That sounded convincing, right? But Anna didn't feel that way. She had found out about Kate from her previous assistant. They didn't give details, but Anna could conclude some things were odd. Kate was not like the image she presented. She was unfriendly—tended to be mean, got angry quickly, lied about donations she gave, and a lot. In conclusion, Anna couldn't believe her words. Most recently, Kate mentioned that someone's donation was hers. But that became the secret of their circle. "That's great. We're happy to work with you as a professional team. Right, Jenny?" Anna finally said something with extra friendliness, even though everyone knew it was a lie. To be honest, she wanted to say something to insinuate her. But then Anna remembered Kate was also vindictive. She didn't want any trouble while working with her. Correction. She didn't want Kate to act bad while under her. "Of course." Jenny still had the same expression. "Now, let's move on to work." She changed her position and picked up the bundle next to her. "Here are some series offers for you." A frown appeared on Kate's forehead, with disbelief shining in her eyes. "Series? Not a movie?" "That's all we have for now. You can read those and choose which one you find interesting." There were three bundles for three titles. Usually, it contained information about the series, including the cast, synopsis, and the first two or three episodes. That was for consideration for decision-making. And one more. Notes on the role offered to the actor or actress. It could be a note from the production team or a minor note by Jenny or the manager as a reminder. "Wait. They didn't offer me the lead role?" Kate showed shock and disbelief after seeing the front of the first script. Then put it on the table. She took the second bundle. Her brows furrowed again. "This isn't the main character either," she snorted in annoyance. She did the same as the first script. "Why isn't there an offer for the main character among these?" she asked in frustration after all the scripts ended the same. Piles were ignored at the table. Anna and Jenny glanced at each other. They seemed to hint at each other to clear up the situation. And in the end, Anna took on the role. Anna took the entire manuscript and put it together. "Maybe they think you're a better fit for these roles." It was her best effort to calm Kate down. She didn't dare to tell the truth about her abilities and could only manage to get that far. It was from their eyes. Not her. "No. I'd be better in the lead role. No. I have to be the lead." Kate said and corrected herself. Anna's brain worked fast. What other reason could calm Kate down? "If you do well, you might get the lead role for the next project." The annoying part of the job was this. Anna had to say nice things to calm someone down. Oh, twenty-five-year-old Kate. Kate should have understood the first time she saw all the role offers. Her acting skills were still not enough to satisfy the team. "But those aren't even the second female lead." Anna closed her eyes. Her head throbbed when she heard that. Kate and her stubbornness were also quite well known. If it wasn't because of the financial difficulties experienced by the company after an actor acted arbitrarily by unilaterally canceling several contracts and making the company pay the fine, Jenny would have refused Kate. Kate was like poison. Only her scandal caused her name to continue to be talked about all this time. "You'll get a good role after this." Jenny intervened. "Is that true?" Jenny nodded confidently. "Sure. Most importantly, show your best acting and make them regret giving you these roles." Really, Anna wanted to laugh. It sounded like a lullaby in her ears. Promises were challenging for any agency to keep. Competition in this world was very tight. "Then which one do you think suits me?" "Huh?" Jenny showed her confusion. But a second later, she understood what Anna was saying. So she took the bundle and skimmed it. "I think it's best for you." She then took one in the middle. "It is a unique role and challenges your abilities," she added. Anna read the title. Murderer. It was mystery and horror-themed. Unexpectedly, Kate immediately shook her head to show her refusal. "I don't like that kind of genre." After asking for advice and then being rejected like that? "Try this. Producers will see how your acting progresses through this," Jenny coaxed. "She's right. They'll see a different side of you. It'll be good for your career." Anna added. Kate hesitated at first, but then she threw herself onto the backrest and said, "Okay. I'll take this."
