“Big brother, I want to speak with Emily White.” Samantha Lee’s expression was full of surprise, but she knew her brother's character very well, and when he made a decision, it was difficult to change. So, she decided to approach Emily White instead.
Alexander Grant looked up, clearly displeased with Samantha Lee's request, but eventually said, “It’s office hours now, whatever you have to discuss, do it after work.”
Samantha Lee hadn’t expected her brother to refuse, and her face fell at this rejection. Emily White, on the other hand, took the opportunity to excuse herself, “Mr. Grant, if there’s nothing else for now, I’ll go out first.”
Alexander Grant didn’t stop her, and Samantha Lee watched Emily White leave with barely concealed anger. Alexander Grant noticed Samantha’s hostility and asked in puzzlement, “I thought you two were good friends. Why do you look like you want to bite her head off?”
Samantha Lee realized she had let her true feelings show and hurriedly tried to cover up, stammering, “N-no, it’s just that...I don't think Emily is suitable to be your personal secretary.”
“Why not?”
“She’s not capable enough.”
Alexander Grant’s lips curved into a sensual smile, his deep voice authoritative and confident, “As for who should work where, I have my own judgment.”
Samantha Lee knew better than to press further. After a moment of silence, Alexander Grant asked, “What did you come to see me about?”
Samantha Lee was frustrated that Ethan Parker had left as soon as he saw Emily White, as she had intended to ask her brother to arrange a good position for him at EC. But since Ethan was no longer around, she couldn’t very well bring it up. She shook her head and said, “Nothing much, just dropping by to see you. Oh, and Mom wants you to come home for dinner tonight.”
Alexander Grant responded with a non-committal “um” and Samantha Lee, understanding that he didn’t like to be disturbed while working, quietly left the office.
As she exited, she didn’t head straight for the elevator but turned towards the office of the general manager’s secretary. Emily White had anticipated that Samantha Lee would come to confront her, so when Samantha pushed open the door, Emily remained calm and collected.
Samantha Lee demanded an explanation, “Emily White, you said you’d support me and Ethan, but what do you think you’re doing?”
Emily White was filled with sadness as she looked at Samantha Lee's face, which was filled with doubt.
She had known Samantha for years, since high school. They had been inseparable best friends through college and into their careers for about ten years.
But had Samantha always been such a good actress, or had Emily simply been blind?
Why did it take her until now to realize that Samantha was the kind of person who would accuse others before taking responsibility herself?
Why was Samantha using such a tone to question her? Emily wanted to know why her once close friend had no remorse for stealing her boyfriend and instead questioned her with such arrogance.
Emily had always made excuses for Samantha in the past, trying to comfort herself and give Samantha a reason to betray her. But now, she was completely awake. She
stopped highlighting data on the documents in front of her and stood up from her seat. Her expression was cold, and she spoke to Samantha with a sarcastic smile, "Ms. Lee, it's office hours. I don't understand why you barged in here yelling at me."
Samantha was caught off guard by Emily's response and became even more angry, saying, "Don't play dumb, Emily. We've known each other for so long. You told me you'd support me and Ethan, but earlier..."
"I didn't do anything earlier, and I didn't say anything," Emily interrupted.
"Yes, you didn't do anything, but the way you looked at Ethan was enough to make him leave!" Samantha accused Emily of being responsible for Ethan Parker's sudden departure. "I know you're not happy, and you still love him, but he doesn't love you anymore. So why can't you just let go? Why do you have to make things difficult for all of us?"
Emily was furious. She had to grip her pen tightly to stop herself from throwing it at Samantha. "Ms. Lee, do you understand what conscience and shame are? You talk about our long friendship and my long relationship with Ethan, but you stole my boyfriend without a word. What gives you the right to stand here and speak to me like this?"
