Chapter 7: The Girl Named Lily The message was sent. Target confirmed. Bring her to me alive. The man in sunglasses slipped his phone into his pocket and disappeared into the afternoon crowd. He never noticed Detective Daniel Hayes walking into the café across the street. ⸻ Elena couldn’t stop thinking about the name. Lily. It echoed through her mind like a forgotten song. “Who is Lily?” she whispered. Mama Grace gently took her arm. “Let’s get you somewhere quiet.” They entered a small café hidden between two old buildings. The smell of fresh coffee filled the room, but Elena barely noticed. She couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching her. At a table by the window sat Detective Hayes, reading through a stack of case files. His eyes lifted for only a second. The woman walking into the café looked hauntingly familiar. Dark hair. Brown eyes. The same face from every missing-person poster in his office. His heart skipped a beat. It couldn’t be… He looked down at the photograph clipped to the front of the file. Then back at the woman. His chair scraped loudly against the floor as he stood. ⸻ Sophia spent the entire night reading Elena’s letter. There was something tucked inside that she hadn’t noticed before. A tiny flash drive. No label. No explanation. Only a single piece of tape with two handwritten words: Open Alone. She stared at it for several seconds before hiding it in her handbag. If her father found it… Whatever Elena had risked her life to hide would disappear forever. ⸻ Back in the café… Hayes slowly walked toward Elena. Every instinct told him to be careful. If she really was alive… Someone had already tried to kill her. He stopped beside her table. “I’m sorry to bother you,” he said politely. “But have we met before?” Elena looked up. The moment their eyes met… A blinding pain shot through her head. A badge. A police station. A man saying, “If anything happens, come straight to me.” She clutched the edge of the table. “I…” Her breathing became uneven. “I know you…” Before she could say another word, the café windows exploded inward. CRASH! Glass flew across the room. Customers screamed and dove beneath the tables. A black SUV had slammed into the front of the café. Three masked men jumped out. “Take her!” one of them shouted. Hayes reacted instantly. “Get down!” He pulled Elena behind an overturned table as bullets shattered coffee cups and windows. Mama Grace screamed. The café erupted into chaos. One of the attackers spotted Elena. “There she is!” He charged toward her. Hayes drew his service weapon. “Police! Drop your weapon!” The gunman fired first. The deafening shot echoed through the café. Hayes felt a burning pain tear through his shoulder, but he refused to fall. Instead, he grabbed Elena’s hand. “Run!” Without looking back, they sprinted through the café kitchen and burst out the rear exit into a narrow alley. Behind them, the attackers gave chase. As they reached the end of the alley, Elena froze. Parked beside the road was a sleek black car. The driver’s window rolled down. A man in a tailored suit looked directly at her. His face was calm. His voice was steady. “Get in if you want to live.” Elena stared at him. She had never seen him before… Yet somehow… She knew his voice.
