Chapter 1 THE BRIDE IN THE GRAVE
Chapter 1: The Bride in the Grave The first thing they noticed was the smell of freshly turned earth. A farmer had been walking through the abandoned woodland just outside Blackwood Estate when his boot sank into the soft soil. Curious, he bent down and brushed away the loose dirt with the edge of his shovel. White lace. He frowned. Another scrape revealed pale fabric soaked with mud. His heartbeat quickened. Within seconds, he dropped the shovel and stumbled backward. “Call the police!” he shouted, his voice shaking. “There’s someone buried here!” ⸻ Rain poured relentlessly as flashing blue and red lights illuminated the dark forest. Detectives surrounded the shallow grave while forensic officers worked in silence. No one spoke as the body was carefully lifted from the earth. She was wearing a wedding dress. The once-beautiful white gown was stained with mud, torn by roots, and clung to her motionless body. A diamond engagement ring still rested on her finger. One officer swallowed hard. “She’s young.” Another carefully brushed strands of dark hair away from the woman’s face. The lead detective froze. “I know her…” He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and opened a missing-person report that had dominated every news channel for the past three days. The photographs matched perfectly. Elena Ashford. Heiress to the Ashford family fortune. Missing on the morning of her wedding. The detective lowered his phone slowly. “Notify the family.” ⸻ Across town, the grand ballroom of Ashford Manor remained exactly as it had been three days earlier. Thousands of white roses had begun to wilt. Crystal chandeliers still sparkled over empty tables. A wedding cake, untouched, stood in silence. No one had found the courage to remove any of it. At the center of the room stood Adrian. Still wearing his wedding ring. He hadn’t slept. He hadn’t eaten. He simply stared at the aisle where Elena was supposed to walk toward him. Instead… His phone rang. He answered without looking at the screen. “Mr. Carter?” “…Yes.” “This is Detective Hayes.” A long pause followed. “We found her.” Adrian closed his eyes. For a brief moment, hope returned. “Is she alive?” Silence. Then came two words that shattered everything. “I’m sorry.” The phone slipped from Adrian’s hand and hit the marble floor. The room fell deathly quiet. Outside, thunder cracked across the sky. Somewhere in the darkness… Someone smiled. Because the woman they had buried… …was never Elena.
