Mama!!!
"You can't stop me loving myself", were the last words Everett and his mom said before they were asked to stop the car by the police. They had been singing Everett's favorite song by his favorite boy band when Jacinta was asked to pull over. She lowered the music and obediently lowered the side window. She did everything she was asked to do and apologized for the music when they asked her about it, even though it wasn't a crime to listen to music with your son in your own car. There had been three of them, one was standing a few steps away from the car, the other was leaning against it, and the last was standing near the window speaking to her. " See, I've done nothing wrong OK, I've got a license, there's nothing wrong so please let me and my son go home"
The two men looked at each other and laughed. "Get out of the car", they said and she silently obeyed. All the while the eight year old Everett was sitting quietly in the back watching the scene and the last policeman was just standing away from the car uninvolved.
"Why are you so calm", the one who was previously leaning against the car said.
" well, I've got nothing to be afraid of. Please why am I standing out here?"
"Come on guys let her go" said the policeman who wasn't involved in the unnecessary questioning.
She turned to open the car and all Everett heard was, "she's reaching for a weapon", before the loud sound of a gunshot was heard. " Jason!!!" the other policemen shouted.
He was quite young to understand what was happening, but all he knew was that someone had pointed a gun at his mother, and now she lay motionless."Wait, that was a gun right? is my mama dead? what's happening? no that's impossible " As these thoughts run through his mind, Everett stepped out of the car and run. He turned around to see that the same policeman who had shot his mother was pointing a gun at him. But the other two policemen got in the way.
He run as fast as he could and found his way to Aunt Becky's house. Becky was their neighbour and the mother of Will, Everett's best friend. He told them everything,"please, you have to save my mom". "Of course honey, we will" Becky said before Everett was put to sleep. Then Becky went to the police station driving as fast as she could.
On reaching the police station, Becky pulled over, and quickly run into the station, "Jacinta Johnson, she's my friend. Where is she? There was an incident on..". " Yes Yes, please sit down and give us a minute" Becky heard one of the cops say. After waiting for a few minutes, the chief walked towards Becky and spoke, "Mrs. Rebecca Smith, I'm so sorry but your friend was going to attack one of my cops. They caught her drunk and driving with the music turned on loud. They asked her to come with them to the station so that they could take her son home but she refused an tried to attack them with a baseball bat" and with that he showed a baseball bat in his hands and claimed that it was found in Jacinta's car. "Wait, that's impossible. OK what are you telling me...she was drunk,, driving whatever, so what are you telling me where's my friend?" Rebecca asked shouting.
"I'm sorry Mrs Smith but your friend is dead and it was self defense".
............................................................
Marcus was going upstairs when his wife Becky opened the door. She had returned from the station. "They said they found a baseball bat in her car, and if he hadn't shot her, she would've attacked them so it was self defense. But I know Jacinta didn't play no baseball", Becky said while sobbing." Marcus, Jacinta never drank alcohol and you know it, she was murdered. Babe she was murdered and they weren't bold enough to admit it now they're framing her?
It seems the conversation downstairs had woken the kids up. Everett and Will run down the stairs. " Where's mom? Is she OK now?"
"Forgive me darling, but you're not gonna see your mom again " Becky said whiles moving toward Everett to offer an embrace. But he steps back and asks, "What does that even mean, where's mom!! ?"
Becky was weeping at this point and then broke out saying, "She's dead Everett, they killed her".
He stood still, he wouldn't be able to see his mom again. Just like in the movies, they used a gun on her and she wouldn't wake up again. She was dead. He turned to his ten year old friend Will and hugged him.
As tears flowed down his cheeks, the only word that escaped his lips were " mama".
