"Please you have to believe me. I didn't do it please. I don't even know how that thing got into my things" Jessica cried out as she was pulled out of her house and forced into the car. Melinda tried to speak, " See miss, you have every right to rem....._" Jessica cut her off, " I need to call my lawyer".
"Well, you have every right to do that, but just know that it'll be useless, because we have the evidence we need and your story just doesn't add up okay" Melinda said." Drive faster Ryan, I can't deal with this anymore" she added, gesturing to the cop in the driver's seat.
Upon reaching the station. Melinda revealed to the chief that his brother's murderer was none other than his wife. The was a sudden look of surprise on the chief's face. "You? Jessica, You?" he said. "You have to believe me, I'm innocent Jessica cried out". I get that he was abusive and irresponsible but to murder him?" the chief said.
"He abused me and he deserved to die...._ "So you did it then?" Melinda cut her. "No I was going to say he abused me and he deserved to die because he wasn't human but it wasn't me. I could never kill a person. Please believe me" Jessica argued.
"Well I must say, you're smart and quite cunning. So sorry to burst your bubble but I'm smarter, so I'm not buying that" Melinda said and walked away. "You know me. " You know me, Please believe me." Jessica said to her brother in-law, but the chief simply stared at her with a confused face and walked away, leaving her alone behind bars.
Melinda walked to her desk and sat down. She had requested for a report on the kind of bullet which was in Jason's body. The reports showed that, the bullet must've been shot from a sig sauer P226. But Jason's gun was a glock 22. This only meant that she had purchased the gun from a dealer, probably along with the silencer. If there was a dealer in town, then she had to find him or her, to avoid putting more lives at risk.
Just then, the chief came up to her desk. "Well, that was quite faster than I expected. Good job Melinda and thank you" he said. "No need chief, just happy to help", Melinda said.
The chief turned around to go but turned back to the detective and said, " don't you think we should look further into this, I still can't believe that Jessica could do something like that". "I'm positive chief, the truth hurts but you gotta deal with it". And with that the chief turned to go. Then Melinda spotted the gun behind the chief. A Sig sauer P226. " What the Hell am I thinking?" she asked herself and looked away. She picked up Jessica's phone which they had confiscated earlier and tried checking her contacts and call logs to see if she could find any clues leading to the dealer from which Jessica had bought the gun. The call logs showed that her most received and dialled calls were from a certain number saved as "honey". It certainly wasn't Jason because he wasn't that much of a caring husband to call his wife that often. She proceeded to check which number under which that name was saved and she received the shock of her life. The chief's number. She just couldn't believe it so she double checked on her phone and there it was. For further proof, she checked the messages on the phone and found a message in the sentbox that read, "its done". Except that it wasn't sent to the chief's number. She quickly dialled the number on her phone and called it. There was a ringing from the drawer of the chief's desk. He opened it and put his hands in it to reveal a burner phone.
She quickly removed her gun and pointed it at the chief. " Chief Gorway, you're under arrest for assisting in the murder of the late officer Jason Gorway."
Later that night, Melinda said goodbyes to her colleagues as she exited the station. It all made sense now. The chief and Jessica were lovers. So he had to take his brother out of the picture, especially because of his attitude towards Jessica. The chief had pleaded and insisted it was a mistake but no one bought it. Both he and his partner in crime had requested for their lawyers, so they were going to drag the case. But Melinda knew they weren't going to win because it was her case. And she always wins.
On entering her car, she received a text message that read:
Bravo detective. I hand it to you, you're smart, but I guess I'm smarter. You should take the girl out. She's innocent. And as for the chief, he's exactly where I want him to be. Brother goes, brother follows. You just played right into my trap. ???.
She dropped her phone and run out of her car into the station as fast as she could. She went straight to the cell in which the Chief has been kept.
And there he was.... Blood oozing out of his throat which had been slit. His shirt had been removed. And a message had been carved into his skin......oops!!!
